The innocent drivers, who have paid fines totalling aproximately £150,000 to the camera partnership, are now entitled to ask for their fines to be refunded and for the penalty points to be removed from their driving licences. But in a shock announcement, the camera partnership has stated that it has no intention of contacting the drivers to inform them of the mistake. Instead it is "considering appeals" from individual drivers. So far there have been ten of these, and all have had their convictions overturned.
Three words - class action lawsuit. Much as I loathe the litigious tendencies here in the US, the prospect of a lawsuit, serious financial loss and bad publicity does give ******* like that something to think about.

Er, so are US number plates identical in design, construction and components as those in the UK - er, i think not (even if said spray worked over there).
Identical, no but they are similar enough that I don't see that it'd make any difference - both are stamped metal sheet, with the front painted. You can go find a picture of one online easily enough or I could post a pic of my Rex.

Try aluminium (er, aluminum) foil over the plates - guaranteed success
*cringe* I learned to pronounce tomato both ways 'cos I was sick of getting blank looks in sandwich shops but I'll be damned if I'm gonna pronounce aluminium the American way!

LOL. ..my aussie brother inlaw claims peeps use various spays for said purpose ou there -but havent heard any individual cases from him yet............
Whoa! Aussies use sprays for something other than sheep???

Stamped metal sheet? When were you last in the UK? UK plates are clear perspex with a yellow or white reflective backing. The numbers are in black on top of the reflective backing & behind the clear perspex.

Too long ago obviously!

Actually haven't been home in a couple of years, haven't lived in England for over seven. Now that you mention it, I do remember being surprised that such a simple thing as a license plate was so different. I guess you just get used to what's around you and forget the rest.

For anyone who's curious, this is what an American license plate looks like:

It's taller than an English one, though not as wide.
Made of stamped metal - aluminium I guess - rather than (as Nick pointed out) perspex.
The background picture varies from state to state. (The one here is Washington State obviously - not to be confused with Washington D.C. which is on the East coast)
Three digits, three letters rather than letter, three digits, three letters (or three letters, three digits, letter, as it used to be).
They're not shown here but the rear plate would have two sticky tags on it, one with the year of next renewal, the other with the month.
The other thing that's different is that most cars have license plate covers - basically a plastic or metal frame around the plate. Most of 'em have either the name of the dealership you bought the car from or an amusing anecdote, such as 'YOU! OUT OF THE GENE POOL!!!'

Bonkers.

Talking Speed Cameras

My advice to anyone who drives in the UK is to get a GPS Radar Detector, they really work. I've not had a ticket in over 4 years.

The ones to buy are the GPS detectors as they warn you of the location of speed cameras. You can even keep them up to date by hooking them up to the internet every night.

Some of the newer models come with a built in Laser Alert, such as the Snooper and Road Angel. These pick up mobile speed traps which are becoming increasingly common.

I think we all agree that driving fast in residential areas is wrong but what i find surprising is that speed cameras are mostly found on dual carriage ways and main roads. It makes you wonder whether the whole thing is just purely to make money.

I think the best solution is to starve local authorities of this revenue by not speeding where there's cameras and the only safe way of doing this is with a radar / speed camera detector.

Regards

Richard

Only 3 posts on Scoobynet & they're all adverts. You've lost at least one customer here.

I think he's referring to the fact you can't even read forum rules, so it questions whether you are to be known a trustworthy supplier. For one it's unfair on the advertisers who bother to follow the correct proceedures for ScoobyNet.

Good to see the mods have removed the advertising

If you drive around the same area you know where the fixed cameras are,but the GPS detectors wont pick up the Hand held and the mobile cameras sat in the back of the van or will it?
GPS will be very useful if you travel around the country and are unawares of the fixed sites...
Dont you just bloody hate British roads!!!!

Thats correct the GPS systems use map points or grid references to locate the Speed Cameras and then warn you when you are approaching a camera.

However the latest snooper and road angels come with laser alerts which will detect the hand held police laser guns. There is also an upgrade for the Snooper S4 that will also detect the new mobile radar guns that police and safety camera units are using.

The latest devices combine GPS with radar/laser detection and are very effective at reducing penalty points and fines.

Cheers

Angry Speeding Fines

Speed Camera Industry is worth millions of pounds and local authorities have got so used to the revenue that they are not going to give in very easily. In London they have even got cameras on the front and backs of buses to fine drivers that use bus lanes in the capital.

These techniques are going to be employed all over the country soon and is set to make the authorites more revenue than council tax.

I think we need discretion and this should be left to the police and not the tax man. If you speed excessively then fair enough then a fine / ban is appropriate, what we need is some common sense.

I live on residential street that runs Parallel to the citys main ring road, I've clocked speeds of up 80mph from drivers that are avoiding the traffic on the ring road..yet there's speed cameras on the ring road and not on my single lane street.

I'm sure local authorities will think twice about putting up a £50,000 speed camera if they are set to make zero from it.
