I also remember a few "my Subaru is the best thing since sliced bread even in the wet" people being somewhat surprised about the M3`s performance in the wet
I remember that day quite well Arron. I was surprised at your performance tbh - you gave so many excuses you should've got an Oscar

You see its all down to the driver
Back to 4wd that anyone can drive quick now eh? Hmm

We will have to take his WR1 over those two hump back bridges near you to see if we can get more air than we did with your Sti and to test how strong the chassis is

Have purchased said magazine.
Could have written my own one.
Would have probably said pretty much the same things.
We`ll see what delights the WR1 brings before I pass judment.
The T25 is on my very short list for my next car.
Next Xmas timw when Iain has dropped the price a bit and has a bomb proof warranty

Default Sorry Mike - but things just dont add up

Mike
I dont want to sound anti Prodrive - i have a PPP'd WRX and am very happy with it... but.......

I for one am totaly amazed at this sort of response. When the STI PPP didnt do what it was supposed to ("i can get 0-60 in 4.6 secs all day") - Mike says its heat soak.

Now his WR1 gets stonked by the imports.. not just on the track but on the acceleration tests - and he's saying its down to the tyres.... and if you want his figures you can have them..... and even tests his car for us that very day with nice figures AND its not a race track car its designed for the road...

WHY ARE PRODRIVE'S QUOTED FIGURES NEVER OBTAINABLE OTHER THAN ON MIKES TEST TRACK????

I SMELL RATS - LOTS OF THEM. It's not good enough to ignore the facts presented with the usual "it drives really well let me show you" stuff Mike. If you quote something and it doesnt add up when someone else tests it - either

a) They had a bad example or a problem with (both) the cars tested

or

b) Your cars a hell of a lot quicker than the ones they test

or

c) Banbury petrol has Nitrous in it

or

d) The figures you quote are rubbish - your 320 horses are only tiny horses compared to the "import cars" horses and dont make the car accelerate the same way as they do on the test

Which is it? What excuse do you have for 2 consecutive tests of "your cars" by reputable magazines concluding that your quotes are unobtainable in the car supplied?

FYI by the way i like the look of the WR1 on paper - am considering buying one. But i want to know that what i'm paying for "on the tin" is what i get when i open that tin...... and so far Mike, your in danger of upsetting my own "trading standards" on this one!!!!!

SO PLEASE MIKE - TELL ME WHY TWO TESTS IN A ROW DONT SHOW YOUR QUOTED FIGURES...

Jza

That's very easy....

The car I did the figures with on Monday, went down to Power Engineering on Tuesday and produced 318bhp. It's done 2000 miles.

The car I did the original figures with produces about 8 bhp more at the wheels on that dyno but similar flywheel figures so the extra (hard!) miles obviously makes a difference to the frictional losses.

When we do the testing on our track we log the ECU and all the additional sensors we fit to test cars so we make sure that water and intake temps are as they would be in normal driving (you know what's coming next......) I'm not sure what EVO did with their testing but they would not have access to the same info and as we put protection into the ECU for both high intake and water temps this may have had an effect on the numbers. Fairly obviously I made sure the test was not affected adversely in this way.

I have the numbers somewhere for the WRX testing as well, do you want me to post them too?

So out of interest, was the EVO test an officially sanctioned one by Prodrive? If so, why on earth did you leave them to it without prodrive representation? Especially if I have got this right, there are some circs where the WR1 ECU de-tunes the performance by design?

That's as mad as my other fav car manufacturer giving EVO a 'badly set up' Caterham Superlight R400 to test and then acting like the poor showing was someone else's fault!!

Graham

You are correct in saying that the ECU detunes performance in some conditions, you wouldn't expect that it could safely let the engine be worked as hard in 40C ambient as it would at 10C.

Subaru UK run the Press cars, not Prodrive and they, like most other manufacturers just send the cars to the Press. Only owners/small companies generally accompany the cars on the sort of tests that have been done recently as they take their own cars along.

Yes, we would have liked to have been there but we weren't invited.... The Type 25's tyres might have been as worn as the WR1's if I have been able to drive it round Bedford then

Sorry for the delay, i have been too busy this week to do much online so am going through this quickly before heading of to nurburg. My ears were burning so here goes.

Adam, i dont normally talk nonsense when it comes to Impreza suspension setup and i am not in this case. Some companies do alter the geometries for magazine track tests, that is a fact. Some companies dont change the geometries for magazine track tests. IM dont, and in my opinion they are being stupid and shooting themselves in the foot with this policy, they should play the game like almost everyone else does.

Until magazines do a proper test of these cars with suspension data, they are a waste of time and dont achieve anything concrete to use as a reference, hence why i always suggest you ignore magazine articles and test drive the cars, talk to the supliers then make a decision.
