Rog

You're worrying me! I've recently bought a type RA and i'm getting 23-24mpg out of it. Does this make me a sad old duffer?

Frankly i'm scared of this turbo thing and considering disconnecting it for better economy!

I've also got an STI V. (About 10,000 miles on the clock) I've been doing between 500 and 1000 miles per week (company fuel)and I can generally get 250 miles per tank. Okay it's a lot of moterway stuff but I've got a heavy right foot. Rog L- If the best you have done is 172 miles on a tank,I'd get it down the doctors for a check up.

17mpg average (60 litres of Super in around 200 miles +/- 20miles), 12mpg when at Santa Pod and 9mpg (or less!) at track days....

Low revs doesn't always equal better fuel economy. A friend's Sierra (with a fuel computer) used less petrol in 4th at 60 than at the lower revs in 5th. Presumably the engine was more efficient in 4th gear at that speed, so needed less throttle (& hence petrol) to maintain its speed.

From what I've heard from other non-Scooby turbo owners, the trick is to get the turbo spinning gently (not full boost). At this point, the turbo improves fuel economy. Same way that turbo-diesel engines often have better fuel economy than the cheaper non-turbo models.

Just remember, when you accelerate, that whistling sound isn't the turbo, it's the fuel whooshing out of the exhaust pipe!

To add to the fun!

MY99 UK 5d (7.5K miles)daily commute along M27 at legalish limit with the occasional blitz up the slip roads I get a pretty regular 26mpg on 95RON. I have a suspicion that I get better FE on SUL but can't quantify.

However... in Germany 'cruising' at between 130 and 155mph indicated - well you could watch the fuel gauge needle moving! I think I get about 12 -14 mpg - still its worth it just to upset the beamers

Cheers

I posted last December on this subject (The truth is in the FAQ, I think I called it) after I had had the MY00 for about 6 weeks. I absolutely $hat myself experimenting how far I could get on a tankful, because I didn't properly consider whwer I might be when/if it ran out. I got 309 miles out of the 60 litre tank and have never been so relieved to see a Shell station. Though needless to say there were about 3 litres still in it.

Since then I don't give a (trunk) monkey's!

Irrelevent I know, but I managed to get 2mpg instantaneous fuel consumption out of the trip computer of a Daimler Double-Dix (5.3l V12).

I've also managed to use about 30 litres in less than 20 miles at MIRA last weekend. I don't really care - I just refill it when when the light comes on

Cheers,

Alex

Now I know I'm an old fart. I've averaged 27 mpg over 9000 miles. My best has been 30.4 mpg, which was a long motorway journey, and my worst has been 23.4 mpg, which was commuting into Bath. I find that short journeys, especially stuck in traffic jams, kill the fuel consumption far more than driving hard. I was flying the day I went to watch the Network Q Rally, but I still averaged 27.6 mpg, which I thought was excellent.

Still being 'oh so careful' (except for pulling away from the lights on the way home tonight - feels like Alcholics Anonymous - I'm Mick and I have a heavy right foot, I had a lapse today, but I'm back on the wagon now!) Anyway 146 miles at indicated 1/2 tank.

Hmm,
Average
usually from full to the warning light is 270 - 280 miles, mostly A roads light traffic legal speeds +- 10mph.
Not sure what it equates to in mpg Dont care either.

Best Motorway trip, little traffic, 'motorway speeds' very little aceleration/decel, fill up to fill up 340 miles and still no light. again did not measure it.

Regards Mark

Guys,

I really don't know whats happening here... Which polish is shiniest? How many miles per gallon do you get (where the emphisis seems to be on higher figure wins)? When is someone going to start a thread on where to get the best value-for-money nodding dog and air freshener accessories?

MorayMacKenzie,

Well you've got me wondering now. I thought this BBS was established so that Subaru drivers can consult and exchange information on any matters they so choose. I don't believe there are any rules regarding the content of threads and, with all respect, the content of the above postings are of a far more constructive nature than your patronising contribution.

Sorry about this but as you can tell I do not feel your posting is in the spirit of the BBS.....IMHO of course.

Otis.

I thought I try the STI5 out the other day. I did not take the rev counter once above 3,000 rpm on a motorway stretch.

I managed 34.2 mpg (including 30 mins of queing on the M5)

I was amazed - averaged between 55-65 mph (half behind lorries)

Only thing is you have to be really disciplined. But what the hell, my firm only gives me 22p per mile above 4,000, so I'll drive as slow as is reasonable to get as much fuel consumption as possible!

Don't try too hard to find out how far you can get... I ran out on Friday, on the M1! Good job I'm in the AA (Would have cost £105+VAT+Fuel!!!!!!) Now I know when to fill it up!

Averaging about 23-24 with too much town driving

If you don't care about this don't bother posting (simple really eh!). I wanted to see if the mpg I was getting was high low or average on the basis of the more I get per gallon while driving how I enjoy driving means more time behind the wheel rather than at the pump.
The whole point of a BBS is for people to share and exchange views on topics that interest them

Unhappy

Otis, and anyone else I may have upset,

My post was intended as a slightly humerous addition to the thread. I thought this would have been given away by the use of the winky smiley, which I have always assumed indicates a toungue in cheek comment.

You may also notice that I have included my own MPG calculations in the post, by way of constructive content.

I am sorry if my post upset you, I was trying to inject a little humour, and possibly variety, into the thread. As Otis pointed out, there aren't any real rules governing the content of threads, and, with all respect, humour isn't governed either.

I am sorry, but you took my posting more seriously than it was intended. I'm also sorry you think I shouldn't be allowed to express an opinion on the subject of the thread.

Careful millband, that comment may be taken the wrong way, but I liked it!

I still love you Moray.

And for those that care, I am getting about 180 miles to the tank on a UK97 car.
Work that out please someone.

Thanks for clearing things up Moray. The fact that you have gone out of your way to do so shows you meant well. My reply was on the back of 'one of those days' which proves its right what they say about 'knee jerk' reactions!!!

Thanks again,

Otis.

Well i have just done 2,500 miles from new (in a month) in my MY00 turbo, and the first dozen fill-ups returned (in mpg):

22
25
24
23
25
18
23
18
24
22
23
23

It has been fairly mixed driving - some longish (100-300 mile) motorway journeys; a bot of pottering around town, and various exercising of the smiling muscles on open roads.

I am not too unhappy about the consumption so far!

5 door MY99. Scoobiesport back box, ITG filter.

30 mile return trip to work, 20 miles ob B roads, 10 in town.

Have tried driving in "purple rinse fashion"
(mostly between 2500-3500 rpm).

Got 18.1 mpg (equates to about 280 miles per tank.
