each to their own, but you're in the minority based on critical reviews and box office response. as to the sprinter-style approach, it's simply breathing a bit of new life into a tiring formula. certainly makes the action sequences much more dynamic (a la 28 days later). i've got the uncut original of DotD - i'd agree with you that it has more of the sense of the utter apocalyptic - however it does lack snyder's dazzling and innovative camerawork plus his sense of careering motion. style over content? possibly.

Well in my opninion for really disturbing stuff you have to hit the print. Read something by Mo Hayden and you'll get more enjoyment outta most films these days

I watched Shadow of the Vampire last night..........totally PMSL Willem Dafore is superb as Nosforatu.

The whole idea of the movie is Max Schreck who played the vampire in the classic Nosforatu film, was in fact a REAL vampire.
Very very funny film.

BU66ER, I wanted to watch that, I forgot it was on On that subject, Nosferatu was a pretty good film for it's time.
Another vote here for the original Haunting, less on the gore more on the atmosphere.

Alien, first saw it when I was 12, & to this day the one movie guaranteed to still give me the *******

Not seen The american ring, but the jap films IMO were as a scary as ****.

The problem these days, is that the emphasis has gone from making the audience use it's imagination, to being as graphic as possible. I don't know about you lot, but my imagination is capable of scaring me way more than any CGI artist, I wouldn't go into a swimming pool, let alone the sea for 3 years after I first saw jaws, I was 8 at the time though

And one last point, a scary film depends entirely upon what you the viewers are scared of yourselves. As a chronic vertigo sufferer, I personally found the opening sequences of Cliffhanger more terrifying than any make-believe monster

Another vote for the Ring (Hollywood version, haven't seen the original 'Ringu'), especially loved the twists at the end.

I also liked 'Blair Witch', though I deliberately went into the theatre having avoided all reviews so that I had no pre-conceptions. Don't know that it would work so well on a second viewing.

If you like the original 'Alien', I would recommend at least a rental of 'Leviathon', it's basically Alien set underwater. Not quite as good as the original - no Sigourney Weaver for one thing - but they did manage to recapture a lot of the same atmosphere.

Not exactly horror but I remember 'Twelve Monkeys' left me walking out of the cinema in a zombified state (and I mean that in a good way). Gawd, that was a few years ago now.

some of the old italian gore flicks are quite good, though the dubbing can be quite bad

I have from beyond on tape - not as good as Re-animator but the same sort of cast..........!!! - pretty dated stuff.......

Agree on the old italian movies - Dario argento stuff - pretty dated now

As far as any print/books go one of the best out there is

''I am legend - by Richard Matheson - 1950's'' - nice vampire short story (150 pages!) - shame about the film - omega man with Charlton Heston - Jeez I'm starting to sound like a horror film anorak.......which I probably am!!

The Hammer House of Horror short films scared me when I was a kid, one or two in particular I can still remember bits of. Saw one recently though and it was bobbins, but hopefully that was just that particluar one

Halloween is my fave horror movie, but none have ever really scared me.
Low budget, great score, don't see much of the bad guy, and typical *he's disappeared* ending, though one of the first.

Wife was shook up by Blair Witch project. I thought she was joking at first!
It seems it either scares you quite a lot or not at all. I was the latter.

The Exorcist still does it for me.

The Thing is one of my all time favourites.

The scariest film I've ever seen bar none, was called 'Nightmares from a damaged brain'. Don't think it was available in anything other than video - quality film.

Nightmares from a damaged brain was one of the origial video nastys so you'll stuggle to get it on dvd/video in the uk. never seen it though.
Fangoria was more into the nastys than the classics. though there is'nt much in the way of video nastys that have'nt been rereleased(with half of the film cut out ) and to be honest most of them are'nt that convising anymore, though some did containe real animal cruelty. have to admit that i'm a bit of an anorak when it come to horror films

Most of my faves are sci-fi/horror and/or comedy horror these days - just cant take the new ones too seruiously - though I did think that The Others was good and also there was a Harrison Ford film that was good.............. that came out a couple of yrs back.............

Faster Mike - most I've seen on the video nasty's front - the only one I never got hold of was Necromantic - which you should have heard of............. but for the average Scoobynet viewer they wouldnt have a clue

I did get scared of the Hammer (should be Hind as the guy who started it all was William Hinds, but used the name William Hammer and he got some good scipt writers like Jimmy Sangster - there you go I'm getting sad now!!!) house of horror series that came out in 1980 was it - I was pretty young then though!!!

the one with harrison ford was what lies beneath, which is quite good. seen the start of nekromantic but stopped downloading it after watching about 20-30 mins of it as it was just to sick. basicly a couple and half a decomposed corpse and a piece of tubing for a dick, i'll leave the rest to your imagination. it very graffic to sday the least.
