Craig H. I think you are wrong to under estimate the Mercedes AMG SL55. They do 0-100 in 10.2 Secs, with a 5.5 litle V8 and 493BHP, I don't think many Scoobys are to see the Mercs headlights. Just my observation as a Scooby driver.

Yes you are, that's the point, all that torque doesn't in any way make up for the fact that your car takes well over 20 seconds to 100mph and would be destroyed over any increment by even a standard lardy bugeye WRX. Now shut up and count your fuel economy/tax savings, you are exactly the type of person who this thread is aimed at.
Chill out NARCO, I'm not claiming my diesel would humble a WRX (but actually it might above 60) just disagreeing that you cant have a diesel and performance. I've owned and tracked a decently spec'd wagon so I'm qualified to compare. I wonder if you've ever owned a WRX?

I am chilled, I haven't owned a bugeye WRX only test driven one (and was dismayed at how blunted the performance felt). Your diesel wouldn't humble a WRX over 60 either, face facts you bought a relatively slow diesel car for economy reasons, performance is all relative and in terms of this thread (ie tossers who try to race Impreza turbos in low powered crap mobiles) even a remapped PD150 is a slow car driven by people who often try to bite off more than they can chew.
I get it almost every week with the same 330D driver who just can't face the fact his car is relatively slow. He should try and beat me in a "who has got the best range/fuel economy" competition because it's the only thing he'll ever win.

Volvo's and Octavia's for me - usually split into two types -
1 - fancy dayglow multicoloured ones with a serious sound-system judging by all the ariels and,
2 - totally debadged ones with a JVC camcorder on a mount to impress all his mates at the Christmas party with his high speed runs.

CLK Mercs should be on there IMO - the 230 K K K Kompressors' - when will they ever learn?
The boy racers just love to see the scooby go go go, but I'm not wasting my petrol on a 1.4VTR or a clio with go faster foglights zzzzzzzz

How about Autocar's own test figures for 50-70 times.
Current WRX = 9.6secs
Golf PD130 = 8.8secs

......and thats just a PD130, There's you, babbling on about how crap and slow a chipped/mapped PD150 would be with 190bhp (admitted through the front wheels) and 290lbft of torque (even more torque than you) Only the 4wd system gets the WRX a decent 0-60 time, once rolling a standard WRX wouldn't stand a chance.

......and after all that, the diesel would still return an average well over 40mpg.

......and as for a BMW 330d being crap, now you're just being stupid.

Wake up and smell the diesel. Not all of them are slow, smoke producing tax breaks.

Is this for real ???? .... LOL

Can anyone get proper set of performance figures posted up for these two cars then ????

Just ONE single figure (50-70, probably held in a high gear, which is pointless) does not tell anything at all, but if the Golf is THAT GOOD all round, I'd like to know about it.

The figure given is for 50-70 in top gear I'd imagine. Can't remember the last time I was in fifth between those speeds, more like 3rd I'd have thought. If you think your Golf will out accelerate even the slowest Turbo'd Impreza then you are a complete moron.

Quoting figures out of context is just stupid.

Thought I'd add, I didn't say a 330D is crap at all, in fact it's a great car. It's also a lot slower than even a bugeye WRX.

If my scoob ever takes over 9 and a half seconds from 50-70, I'll go and buy a diesel with pleasure.

Sure to be in a high gear. The Golf would benefit from the torque of the diesel, the Scoob might not even be on boost !!!! ???? .... LOL .... some of these 'in gear' accelaration times are so absolutely meaningless.

Just waiting now for someone to post to say they've driven a giant wet bar of soap and it 'handled' as well as a Scoob .... LOL

Agreed. 9 and a half secs after 50 and you'll be very nicely into 3 figures in the Scoob

the thing is thou the 330d is not exactly slow in 3rd between 50-70 or for that matter 4th or 5th or 6th. I'll be adding a little tuningbox next week which takes it to 245bhp and 380lbft at around 1900rpm but then it revs quite happily round to the red line.

It isn't as quick as a tuned scooby, like Nacros, but I think it'll give a few other cars a bit of a surprise...

Current WRX = 9.6secs

According to Prodrive's figures, it is actually 10.0 seconds.

... but anyone who tries overtaking even a milk float in 5th should be driving a diesel!
The turbo only wakes up at 65MPH!
Third is a more appropriate gear, and for the standard car it takes 3.5s. (or 2.9 with PPP). Don't compare apples and oranges.

depending on gearing, my vf29 starts to push at 2,500rpm = 50mph in 5th, 65mph is 3,250 in 5th andis really blowing. Mind due my 5th is like a uk 4th .

Never tried a 50-70 in 5th but I reckon 4 to 5 seconds

Sorry Chris, no doubt NARCO has test driven a NSX and thinks its slower than an Impreza Sport, so not a good comparison

I Met a 306 having ago yesterday, gave it a short blip then let it drive off..... Then not 2hours later saw it on the cover of one of 'those' magazines.

3L V6, LOL, what a waste of money I didn't even think it was a GTI-6!

Seriously though, scoobs are the worst for trying it on, almost every turbo has a play wih you!

Most of them arn't maniacs trying to write you off either, which makes for god fun.

looking like the beamer drivers are going to have the honour of winning this - although the saxo / corsa brigade aren't too far behind...

Minis! I met one of the new ones (a yellow one) on a roundabout / slip road area once, the **** kept pulling out in front of me every time I tried to overtake, with a number plate which looked like SPXX EDY (I'm sure you can guess the numbers). Trouble is, he was far from speedy, it wasn't even a cooper.

Until I had the graphics put on the car I found it's the nobhed BMW driver that wants to race you. Nearly everyday there's always a 320 or 318 thinks he's going to smoke you and normally does....put out filthy blue smoke of a nackered engine trying to beat you.

I've found it's best to drive along side them and when their cars at its max then politely wave goodbye letting them see what the car really has to give

Now virtually nobody wants to play anymore so have to be content with cruising at a steady --- on usual private runway the 127

Motorway? A std bugeye WRX is NOT a lot quicker than a PD150/330D - not when rolling in top gear anyway.

530d is limited to 155mph.
535d is also ltd to 155, has 280ish hp and 400+lb ft?

??
530d has a top speed of 152, has 218 BHP and weighs ... 1670kg.
I'd like to think that a car with 225 BHP and 1380kg would feel quicker, even with 4WD losses. Apples and oranges again, a diesel BMW is not built for the same purpose as a WRX.
