Specsavers, vision express, et al are rip off merchants.
On the day before some exams at uni, a few years ago now, my glasses broke, the cheapest replacement pair I could get was over 300 quid at any of the opticians open on a Sunday in newcastle. I taped the buggers up with duck tape and got a pair the next day for 30quid at my usual optician.
Best place I have found is CostCo, plenty of "designer" frames at about 75quid, and lenses from plastic to whatever.
I got ziess titanium frames for 85quid (best i've ever had, no weight and bombproof) and some rather nice ziess lenses which were 140quid including a tint. I was -10D and the ziess lenses were lighter and thinner than the -2D plastic lenses I have now.
