If you decide to go for a MY99 onwards uk car, its fairly easy to increase the power
up to around 260 - 270bhp when you get used to the car and the funds allow.
The most common route to achieve this would be a new or secondhand exhaust,
replacement airfilter and a tek2 or 3 re-map.
There are a few well respected companys who can do this re-map, and it leaves all the cars safety overrides in place.
There are not alot of sti wagons about really, as, as far as i know they were never offically sold in this country, so any you see for sale will be imports.
Good luck with the hunting, and i might see you at japfest.

Given the choice of an MY 99 with, and without, it won't be hard to choose
Apart fom the cosmetics, the difference between a 'classic' and a bugeye is that the power delivery was "refined" in the bugeye as Subaru tried to expand the appeal to more owners, and the "kick in the back" was muted. But the handling is better.
You're getting stacks of advice from enthusiasts..... mine would be: get yourself the most recent 2/h mainstream UK market car (with PPP if offered) you can afford: enjoy it (and learn to drive it - AWD with plenty of power is different!). As you settle into it and the Subaru Community decide what you want to do for the future on the basis of your experience and knowledge as you gain it, rather than leap for an enthusiast's car straight off.
Enjoy!

Oh, and the Jap importer at Greenham went ...er....out of businesss (careful what you say TJ...)...last year...
Bulldogs at Twyford have a couple of MY99 UK wagons...(dead standard)...Simpsons at Highworth (Swindon) have no classic wagons, but a couple of Bugeye saloons...
and yeah..the prices on the bugeye (Mk2) can be favourable as they don't attract as much interest (in general)
I'm heading towards my 3rd Scoob (working up all the time) all are/were/will be wagons

Thanks for the advice - would almost certainly be doing the exhaust and induction mods in any event to help the engine breathe - not to mention improvement in 'burble'. And will be looking UK now methinks bearing in mind the amount of advice on the subject. May well see you about at Japfest!!
Cheers

Another little bit of information for you.
Being as your an old git like me, it might be helpful to give liverpool victoria a call for an insurance quote. They are very mod friendly. My car has gone from standard 208bhp to 275bhp with no increase in insurance.I have informed them of the changes i have made, and they just told me to keep all receipts
If you go to japfest, stop for a chat.
Look for a red wagon with greg.g on the windows
Helpful lot on here arent we

i think you should come to the NBO2
it is a must last year we had over 100 wagons there (and my own Green wagon)
worth the trip up you could even camp out with the midlands boys nearby and talk scoobys to you pass out with the beer !!
join the convoy and if you ask me nicely i will let you park up in the field with the 200BHP /evo gang !!!
NBO2 the event of the year
check it out on Northern

Definately tempting, and sounds quite a lot like a JAE kinda do. Depends really on what's going on at the time. Will be going along to Coombe next month and assuming I get the FTO really for trading AND of course I can find a dealer who's got a suitable car and prepared to accept a trade in then NB02 could be my first scoob'd up event!
Talkng scoobs and passing out on beer sound like a plan!!
