I think Big Ron has been hit with the over sensitive political awareness that has turned this country into a joke. I agree totally with Tiggs first part of his post (upto the point where he starts slagging off football). I don't think his comments are racist, I do however think they are very insulting which on its own is unacceptable behaviour in broadcasting. Wop or Yank is no different in terms of describing someone's nationality. We call Americans yanks all the time but if we call an Italian a wop its racist. WTF? Brits are known as poms and roast beefs (by the French) and if I was referred to as one of those names I would not take it as being racist whatso ever.
I think this country needs to get a ******* grip of itself and make the over pc brigade the minority and not the majority
Some here will now probably call me racist for my views but tbh I couldn't give a **** as I know what my true beliefs are and are happy with them

Out of interest would the following be classed as racist ?
1. Selling a magazine advertised as for white people and white culture.
2. A fastrack training program for white people in employment.
If the answer is yes then surely selling "the voice" etc is also racist and the new police program for fastrack training for ethnic minorities is also racist.
I certainly don't wish an argument on either point but I sometimes find it odd that racism does not apply equally.

sorry - got a bit over excited there. however, this argument gets trotted out time and time again. there are pros and cons to positive discrimination - i don't necessarily agree with it. however - any discussion about racism can't simply ignore the historical situation that gave rise to it.

Sorry but I'm with Tel on this one, I believe racism is endemic in all cultures on many different levels, be it a flippant statement of additional negative reinforcement to full blown extremists, it can be seen as one of the ways we ascert ourselves in socierty & I truely do not think I have ever met someone who is not racist to some degree even if its an unplanned comment with no real intent. Police/ Social workers et al are told they are racist and given training to combat it.

I am not sure what went on but have read the news article and to me it sounds like Ron made a backroom comment to his collegues about something that had dissapointed him, the same way we all do his only mistake wa snot switching his microphone off. If he had switched it off nobody would be any the wiser as to what he said, and everyone else is so pure that they have never made comments about people under their breath or in open chat with mates and collegues.
I am not racist but I work I Germany in a very multicultural environment.

Tis funny, the racism argument always focuses on white people "abusing" black people, and nobody ever admits that the reverse is also the same.
I live in a highly muslim populated area, and went to school with most of the Asian "gangstas" (their words, not mine) that drive around my nearest town in BMW's, Scoob's etc terrorising whoever they want to.
Some parts of town are no go areas for white people, and their blatant dislike of anyone white is shown and well known. They are just as racist against white people as the equally annoying white scumbags are against them.

I have several black friends, we all get on really well. One of them, actually finds it offensive if you don't see his colour, if you know what I mean. It's his identity and shows his heritage.
Racism comes in all flavours and colours. Not just exclusive to one genre of people.

An 'ethnic' gets a kicking & it's instantly a racially motivated attack - whereas is happens the other way & to even suggest the idea (most of the time) is an outrageous statement....

If you know the rules and break them whether accidentally or otherwise, then if you get caught you have to pay the price. I would suspect that big Ron's circle of friends use the word N**ger quite frequently and this was therefore the norm for him to do so in what he thought was an off-air and therefore unguarded moment.
If he had called the player in question a lazy black git then that would have been a statement of fact in my view, even though the colour is not really that relevent to the incident of course. Would he still have had to resign if he had said 'black' instead of the 'enn' word??

Even though Ron Atkinson has one of the BEST reputations for having sucessful working relationships with "black" players (call them what you will) you assume he uses the word ****** in a derogatory fashion all the time.
I'm sorry, but I don't believe if someone came up to you in a pub and asked politely "excuse me Paki, can I get to the bar please?" that you would accept it....

Buzz - I don't use the Nig word myself and therefore am assume that anyone who does use it in public hasn't just done so for the first time in their lives. Quite a reasonable assumption.
On your second question, I should clarify that the use of the term to me is akin to calling someone a git or knobber. In another words its something that known acquaintences can use between themselves. Would you call a stranger a git? Don't think so.

Personally, I dont think its racist, he wasnt calling him because he was black, he was calling him because he was lazy. His choice of words wasnt the best, but no one would care if he'd have called Scholes a lazy ginger.
