Was interesting on Question Time last night with everyone on the panel outdoing themselves in condemming Atkinson. A bit hollow I thought.
Lets not forget the amount of rap songs out there with rappers refering to themselves as '******', and, how often have you refered to Chinese takeaways etc as a chinky.

I genuinely cannot see how anyone could possibly discriminate against someone, or think of them as in any way inferior, because of their skin colour or ethnic origin. Maybe that makes me a Guardian reader par excellence, but the fact is there's not a hint of racism in my thoughts. Nor of sexism, when it comes to that.
There are those who have these thoughts, but surely there can't be many left? After all, I'd imagine we all work or in some way associate with people of different ethnicities, and I'd be truly astonished if anyone could give me an example of someone being useless because they're blacl/yellow etc. They might be useless, but their skin colour would, I'd imagine, have less than the square root of sod-all to do with it.

The Moose thats the whole point though, Ron Atkinson was not saying he was lazy because he was black ffs. Its attitudes/misinterpretations such as yours that are causing this to be something that its not. He used the word ****** as an adjective to descibe the blokes skin colour/appearance just the same as he used to word lazy to describe his performance in the game. He was describing the appearance of the bloke. At no point did he accuse him of being lazy because he was black.
There is nothing wrong with being black just the same as there is nothing wrong with being tall/lanky or wearing glasses/being 4 eyes. Its called description, however narrow minded/politically incorrect it maybe, it doenst mean the same as being racist!

Did anyone hear what Ian Wright had to say about this on 5 live yesterday?
Apparently Big Ron would regularly make inappropriate remarks when they were studio guests together to such an extent that Wrighty had to pull him up on it and 'ave a word'.
It just comes down to the fact that Big Ron was obviously comfortable using that sort of language, hence the reason it 'slipped out'
if you dont use that sort of word regularly, then it doesnt just 'slip out'.
and for those people that think the word '******' is merely a harmless descriptive term meaning black person then please feel free to walk through brixton high street holding a sandwich board proudly proclaiming this.

Moose - you've missed the point though. "Big Ron" isn't a racist. He simply used the term when he was trying to say that the player was being lazy, and he was right. He wasn't discriminating against Desailly because he is black, but was commenting on his performance during the game, and used what is currently deemed a racist term.
You have to remember that old habits die hard. Ron Atkinson is of the age group where that sort of language was common, and had no nasty, racial meaning. Nowadays anything can be miscontrued as being racist, especially something as obvious as what he foolishly uttered.

Frenchboy its obviously so offensive to black people that they have to refer to themselves as that word? I have many music cds with lyrics on sung by black people calling themselves *******. How come if its so terribly offensive to them that they can call themselves that word? Give us a break! I'm sure Snoop Dog/Dr Dre etc etc are so terribly hurt by referring to themselves as *******. '******' has always been an offensive, derogatory and demeaning term.
some things are inherantly wrong and public acceptance of them doesnt justify their use.
