As a general point, going out of your way to circumvent stated acceptable use policy and implemented security features is far more likely to involve a P45 than the odd accidental click.

No-one has a god given right to use the computer and network, provided by your company in order for you to do your job, for anything you *might* decide is ok. It costs companies real money to provide the stuff in the first place and even more to then police it because people cant be trusted not to take the ****.

Not read all the pages but I do have some questions.

How can they prove it was a certain person using the PC?

User details etc. Are all fine and dandy but doesn't mean it was you. How many cars get caught speeding and it is the registration that is used to find the owner of the car but not the driver.

I know they can say well if it wasn't you where the hell have you been all day but you see my point. Unless there is a witness or two you shouldn't have a worry. Kiss goodbye to your career etc. but it saves you from getting the sack!

The IP address can be traced to the user login. Also via the web logs.

Times logged in, usage, whereabouts etc can all be monitored.
If it's your login then it's your fault. If you have let someone use your login then you are held responsible. In most companies you are not to share login's.

The first time I encountered our companies verion of WebSense, was trying to check the lottery numbers at the Lotto website. It came up blocked. A few hours later a lass from IT came into the office to install a new PC, and when she saw the lottery tickets on my desk she said "You must be Steve then, you can't go on the lottery website you know".

Personally I think it's good to have some form of protection, but it sucks that IT staff can snoop on everything you do. Imagine if your boss tapped your phone line to make sure you only used it for business calls.

sith, but they need to prove you gave it out surely?

I can't believe any court in the land would look at the evidence and say, oh look it's your login you must be guilty?

It's like having your car stolen and it being involved in an accident and YOU being thrown in jail becuase it was your car!!

You are meant to keep all passwords secret and they are force changed every month. They are meant to be unique and not easily guessed.

It's the same if you walk away from your PC with out locking the workstation. If misuse occours then you *can* be held partly responsible.

With the car you have two possibilities. If the car is stolen when it's alarmed and locked then the insurance will payout. If it is unlocked with the keys in plain sight / running then the ins company will laugh at you and will not payout. In one instance your held responsible in the other your not.

It's all down to assement. Have you been negligent in your duties to protect your password / login or car.

Not meant to be a surmon, just an explanation.

Totally agree with Sith.

You'll find that more and more companies will be becoming more and more clued up with regard to I.T security / comms policies over the next few years. For example, in the US, since ENRON and WorldCom, many companies are now having to prove who did what, when and why. This is bound to brush off on UK and other EEC companies, as there are lots of cross-Atlantic partnerships/relationships, Etc. I realise this seems unrelated to surfing the Web at work, but if you need to improve your auditing, you're gonna soon realise that some people in your organisation DO take the p*ss, and probably have been for a while, without you knowing.

I too am sorry to hear, what I consider, a pathetic story SB. I also am in charge of our ISA firewalls and They will know from the logs, as many have said, exactly what, when and how much you have used the net so dont deny anything if its true.

I know that there are some complete nutters working here when it comes to surfing **** and and it amazes me how much time they spend doing it, but I have also been informed that this "country" has privacy laws in regards to this and we should not be looking at the logs at all? Its these dudes that should be tossed onto the street not someone who spends a bit of time on a car site.

But what I would like to know is this: if you have been surfing SN in your down time at work then what difference is there to doing that or staring out the window wasting time or talking with your mates at work and wasting time? If you get your job done what difference should it make? And as for Email, is sending private "Electronic" Mail the same as sending an old fashioned Letter to a friend from work? Could you get sacked for that, after all you would be using their ink and paper instead of computer and net access, so shouldnt this be a sackable offence as well? Seems too many discrepencies for my liking in the electronic world and too many people suffer for it.

Enough rambling, good luck Saxo Boy and I hope it all works out for you in the end.

Unrelated to topic but one thing people forget to realise is that e-commerce relies on people buying while at work!! If all the major UK companies decided to lock down net access then that would be like striking a knife into the heart of online shopping. The only way to survive would be to change the people’s attitude for buying online.

IMO - if general net access doesn't affect your job's performance then I can't see any harm in it.

The difference is that IT know I'm doing it. Whilst I surf SN for a 10 minute break in the afternoon others go out to the main door for a *** or have a game of solitaire and there is no way of knowing they are doing that. Its all a tad unfair to be honest but such is life.

Still no news today and still no HD back! I've now ran out of sites to visit and resorted to reading an issue of EVO in the afternoon.

What!? So you're now sitting idle and the public of East Lothian are paying for you to sit doing nothing! I'm going to phone up & complain and insist they replace your HD ASAP

What a disgrace & waste of public money.

I must add that reading this thread has really worried me, I only view scoobynet, toyota hilux forum and ebay at work but leave my browser running all day , I also use my work email for personal use and probably send 15 - 20 a day minimum (containing explicit words and content). I have also viewed a few 'compromising' mpegs and pictures that have been sent to me. I work in a small firm (40 ish people) mostly older people who I know don't use the net much and if they did top ten lists etc I would fill the whole top ten

I have never looked at p0rn or searched for anything dodgy but have had a LOT sent to me. (some off one of the partners of the firm) I have never seen a policy document or anything similar. We do not have an IT department it is done externally but the firm is pretty clued up and I fear they will be asking them to check useage etc.

Worried, tell me about it. Every year we have to do a couple of hours filling in online forms and questionaires about what is correct use of email and IT, and there is very little mentioned about how long you are allowed to surf for, though there is loads about not using sarcasm and other stuff in company email, especially when dealing with 3rd parties!

I've really started to cut down on internet use, and I've never used work email for personnal use.

Hope you get some good news tommorow SB.

JSW: Don't worry about the amount of time the browser is open. it only records clicks to pages/images etc. However, if whilst its open you're clicking on a new page every couple of mins....

there seems to be a lot of ppl not using their heads here.

forget contracts and rules and try common sense.....you wouldnt use company letter head to corrospond in a casual manner with mates, you wouldnt use the compay machine to frank that corrospondence.....you wouldnt have your mates post you loads of crap to read at work and certainly not ****.

and you wouldnt have a magazine on your desk and spend half the day reading it.

i'd sack the lot of you!
