Gems have found the route of the problem, and Steve is trying a re-written ecu in another car, before coming up to do mine again.
The installation was never finished on mine, so i`m in no position to say anything good or bad.

mapping?
Having had my car mapped by Pat originally by Pat in Oct 03 the results were average, plus there was far to much activity on the knocklink. after not being able to sort these probs out i decided to pay a bit more and get Bob to map it. All I can say is WOW, what a difference. If you compare the 2 maps there are some big differences.

Called BRD to book a map and they were booked up 3 months in advance, called Scooby Sport on the Wednesday and by Saturday afternoon I had a Tek3 from Pat.
Best money I ever spent.

If it wasn`t for the input from Bob Rawle I doubt if I would ever have got near to 585 bhp in the STi 6 Wagon and I have been very happy with the Link ECU so much so that we are about to fit one to my WRX Wagon. Looking for 400 + bhp on a budget project and a lot of it is down to Bob.
The STi 6 Wagon is about to get a new engine, still 2 litres and Bob is installing a Motec and looking after mapping. We hope to exceed 600 bhp with the additional modifications. Results to date speak for themselves.
Bobs mapping has been totally trouble free and I have never known him resort to a Dawes Device or GBE valve for boost control etc. If you want an optimum power map with an engine left in a safe condition I think you will go a long way to better Bob Rawle.

what is the difference betwen motec, link and the oem ecu's.
I thought that if you were to use your standard ecu, it would be safer.
Can they be remapped differently.

The reason i wrote this thread was that I am looking for the greatest increase in tourque at the cheapest price.
I was looking at a full decat with a remap
I guess it would depened on who did the remap to get the best results, would I be correct in what I am saying or have I been wasting everybodys time.

I would say use Pat or Bob, both are well proven, have good after sales back up and available accross a wide area.
the problem is there are tales about eveyr mapper, but you seldom know the full story. For every story of someone going from mapper A to B and being delighted, there is another from someone that went from B to A and been equally delighted. But I have not heard any stories of being delighted when going from A or B to C.
You should also be aware that you can only map to the limits of the car. If a car will only run with X degrees of advance, due to a problem with spark plugs that were thought to be good, you might get it mapped somewhere else with new plugs and be amazed at the difference.

I have not read all the way back through this thread - however if you want to increase torque at the lowest cost...

I suppose you dont no how good your map is until you have compared it against another mapper.On this thread i would say bob just pipping it.

Probably every mapper has blown up a car!
Ive heard of Bob/Pat and other mappers blowing a car up
But the question is how many cars have they mapped and how many have been blown. Both Bob and Pat and great mappers and of all the cars they have mapped, only 1-2 have had problems

Performance tuned engines blow up from time to time. There are multiple causes, sometimes the map, sometimes not.
Two of the ones I did blew up, both over 300 BHP, both oddly enough more conservative maps and both were used repeatedly at 150+ mph. One after rebuild to completely standard is detting on the standard ECU so there is likely another factor like a fuel supply issue or MAF problem (which should be checked on rebuild).

How quickly people forget.............
If a car lets go either shortly after, or even after a long period after it's been mapped, the owner is far too quick to blame the mapper.
Whilst I don't doubt that very occasionally the mapper may make a mistake, it's VERY RARE, and if a car does let go after mapping, it's HIGHLY likely that it would have let go at some point, regardless.
Whilst mappers such as Pat, and Bob will take every care to make sure the car is in a fit state to be mapped in the first place, it's impossible for them to know EXACTLY what the condition of the engine in.
It's common sense that if an engine isn't 100% to start with, increasing the loads/stresses will help promote a failure far more quickly.
Owners never want to accept that the car would more than likely have let go anyway, they are upset, looking for a reason, ans it's just been mapped !!!!
I know both Pat, and Bob very well, and how they both map. Both are meticulous about the fuelling, and ignition. Both use det' cans, and wide band.
Neither would let a car go without being 100% certain that the fuelling, and ignition were 100% safe.
What you never hear about, are the owners who have allowed the oil to run low at some point, or the guys who think that throwing in some extra octane booster just before a re-map, is a good idea, who then either don't realise the implications of not running the same fuel all the time, or can't get 97/Optimax, but take a chance on ragging it anyway.

Yes there are two sides, but I suggest you know them, before making such implications !!!

I don't know if the rumours about Harvey's car are true, but even if they are, I don't think ANYONE, least of all Harvey, will be blaming the person responsible for mapping.
He's been pushing the limits on his car for 10's of thousands of miles, the most surprising thing, is that it's actually stood up to it this long.
If the rumours are true, I'm sure Harvey will post about it when he's ready, along with what happened, so other people can try and avoid the same issue, if it turns out to be an issue in the first place.
