Reality:
I bought a new Euro import, ran it for over 2 years and 20k miles, then sold it, taking a total depreciation hit of almost 2.5k.
Or is someone going to tell me I just imagined it?
I'll leave it at that. Being scoobynet everyone has their own opinion, even when they don't have any first hand experience.

Euro WRX MY01 purchased for £18000.
PX'd for £13000 last October against my Tavia RS. I know he valued the car at £11 500 and knocked £1500 off the Skud. If my car had been a UK car, I would have got £300 more. This PX price was underwritten by a Subaru dealer.

Lets get something clear here:-
We are talking about one of the least desirable Impreza's - its the UGLY version AND its a grey Import!
It's not got any mods on it and it hasn't got Gold Wheels or else the P/Ex would be even LESS! be thankful for that.
Everyone was trying to tell people on here that the BugEyes would take a smack come resale time - some didn't listen

On the contrary - the car we are discussing is worth just what you say it isn't .... as that is the offer made on it!
I could think my car is worth £25k - if I am only offered £6k then £6k is all that it is worth!
Its quite a simple concept really

There is not an '01 WRX with 28k on the clock in the land to be had for 7.5k. Simple as. It will easily make much more money via an ad in AutoTrader.
7.5k is just greedy dealer figures coming out.

...not to mention factoring in dealership costs, as well as the fact that buyers have comeback on buying 2nd hand cars from dealers, so costs there too.
Do you understand how businesses make money?!
Are you so naive to think that Tesco buys a tin of beans for 28p and sells them to you for 29p?

You should have said it was black with gold wheels !
[Breaths a sigh of relief].......Now I suggest you go and eat 'humble pie' and ask nicely for the £7,500 PX deal.

This talk about "you bought it for 3K less than a UK car so you should expect to take a 3K drop on resale value" is nonesense.
If it is exactly the same car as a UK version after the warranty runs out then residuals should be the same.
People who get 'friends and family' discounts from dealers don't offer the sme discount on re-sale so why should someone who is savvy enough to buy a UK equivalent car from EU be expected to do so?

I'm in Sydney BTW so thankfully I've left this crazy situation behind, but I've just had the exact same thing happen to me when selling my Clio Sport in the UK at the end of last year...

If you buy an import and try to px it with a uk dealer he will price it much less than a UK car, for the simple reason that joe public goes to the uk dealer to buy a UK car and they are not interested in an import unless the price is enough to change thier preconcieved ideas about imports.
So to get the most for your import take it to an import dealer. Oh, sorry they buy them much cheaper from Japan so they won't be interested either.!!!!!

Just bung it in AutoTrader for a few grand more than the dealer p/ex price and watch it go !!!!
Then forget any idea's of buying another one from a dealer. Especially at £25k.
Have a good look round for an STi privately advertised, they are all depriciating like mad, so with a little bit of work you can bag a nice one at a low price.
With your car and around £10k or so you should be able to get '03 STi no problem.
Don't be a mug and play the dealer game unless you can afford to do so.

Prep - service, warranty check, warranty upgrade, valet, VAT on the margin, pay salesman & actually make some money at the end of the day
That £4,000.00 easily becomes £3,000.00 after prep, of which you pay 17.5% on the original margin (another £700) so we are now at £2300.00
Of course we have to pay the salesman (normally 10% of whatever is left in the chassis)
This is of course before you even give ANYTHING away for a discount/over allowance....
So that £4,000.00 is now considerably less than £2,000.00 which, in the big scheme of things really isnt very much if it isnt a big dealer.
Funilly enough, just like the company you work for, the dealer wouldnt mind making some money every once in a while - last me I checked they were not a registered charity!
But I forgot - I clearly have no idea what i'm talking about, all those practical years of experience working in the motor trade in a sales enviroment taught me nothing

The general public do NOT want to pay as much for a car that yes, maybe the same spec as a UK car but was sourced from Europe. Maybe you do, but from my experience the majority don't.
Unless you fancy going on a one man crusade to change the way the whole motortrade operates, then it's here to stay.

The motor trade is on its knees at the moment. A friend of mine works for an independant high class dealer (BMW, Merc, Porshe Boxsters, Mitsi Shoguns that sort of thing), due to the amount of stock about he is finding that dealers are bidding low, and I mean real low.
For example:
Fully loaded 03 Galaxy with under 10k miles, Dvd, 7 seats etc. Trading in glasses for 18k, best bid 14.5k!!!!!
The dealer isn't really interested in the car unless he can steal it, if he misses out there will be another one along soon. So if he makes 5 bids on 5 cars and wins one he's happy.
Unfortunately for the consumer the motor trade is not interested in keeping values up, they are only interested in making money. It's called business.

I just bought a new 04 Sti Uk for 23,800 cash. The dealer offered me 9,500 for my 01 WRX bugeye (euro import). I thought this was too low as its a minter and have decided to keep it and try to sell privately. Anything above the 9500 is beer vouchers in my pocket...............

C,
fine thanks , tuning my car steadily so as not to be too embarresed by the local mitsi crowd
unfortunately most think that their car residuals are bullet proof, agreed that some hold better value than others, boxster 2.7 , evo I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII,VIII but most take a savage kicking as do their owners wallets.
as for using dealers, well IMHO thats just crazy, someone else in the chain who needs a (hefty) cut of the value.
buy private, sell private and grow a big pair of nuts.
saying that, I bought from a dealer , but got £1500 trade in more than I paid on my old company vectra so in that case it suited.
take it easy and dont let down your guard for too long
Andy

@ Fidd
someone mentioned an '02 being much better
MY02 has aerial in rear screen so no external A-pillar aerial, and an illuminated ring around the ignition slot.

So? are we all agreed now that £7.5k is pretty good actually?
I mean, its Black
Has GOLD Wheels
Is an Import
Been modified
and, to top it all off - its the ugliest and least desirable Impreza
The motortrade very rarely get it wrong, yes they are in business - but, It is their business and they know what sells and what doesn't
Now, if it had been a Classic MY00 UK car without mods .................. we are talking serious money! - but, then again, thats the one EVERYONE wants!
