You should have a green cross shaped piece of paper after clicking on the blanket till it rips, if they are placed correctly you will automatically know. You get given a "soul" box.

The hair paper revealed 12 squares but only 6 are used like dominoes. These correspond to the position of the symbols.

Ray- you have to collect the blanket in the menu first before you can then take it back out to rip it.

Is it trial and error as to which number the characters go on, or should the pattern of characters found on the sheet in the medicine bottle fit the cross?

Click once in the menu then again on the green sheet. They will always go on but you won't get the soul box unless they are on in the correct order.
