If you like Sauternes - a white dessert wine - 2003 is reckoned to be fabulous. Also the best Sauternes are far better value than the best red Bordeaux wines. I am going to try and get some Climens and some Rieussec.
These wines will keep for 50 years!

PC, I was only introducing another type of wine to the choice. Anyway Yquem apart they are better value than the top reds.

fair enough - almost tempted to buy that wine on your link. have to look at waiting at least 10 years to drink it, though. and by the time you get it out of bond (in 10 years time) it will have cost you about £30 a bottle. still not bad value, though.

quite possiby, wakeboarder. this is where self-interest creeps in. Pete pulls the cork on this fantastic bottle of wine from his son's birth year, and gives him a little glass. he then drinks the rest himself while PP junior and his mates get hammered on stellas and bacardi breezers.
best of both worlds.

german heritage chap but been making wine in the Barossa Valley in Oz for many a year.
otherwise i would love to afford a quality Gran Reserva Rioja or St Emillion Grand Cru for drinking in 18 yrs time !
bought some nice Oz and French wine from Laithwaites En Primeur in the past few yrs.
these days i'm left at the cheap end of the market ! or i drink sambucca instead

Guys, was up on a run with 20 other scoobs in Bourgongne a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic time doing the "Grand Cru" route...only we did it *through* the vineyards on those "made for tractor" roads
Anyway, if you are seriously thinking of buying some wine, get yourself over to france for the day/2 days and get it straight from the producers. At the end of our day rummaging around in the grapes, we ended up at a wine-tasting session at the quite respectable Nuit de St Georges gaff. Their 97 was quite palatable at 25 euros a bottle...and the 03 was going for 16 euros a bottle and will be fantastic in 18 years time. You will pay well over the odds if you buy from anywhere else of course and the driving in France is hard to beat! The Bourgogne region is littered with great wines - Chambertain, Aloxe Corton etc. so make a wee effort and get yourself over here - 2003 was a superb year for wine so fill yer boots whilst you can !
