Not as well travelled as some but....... mountain walking in Corsica & a business meeting 3500' up in the Italian Alps were memorable...... then at home, watching the sun set in the sand dunes at Perran Sands after 7 hours of perfect 5' surf.

Re Lake Louise - didn't look that impressive to me, it was all white. However, I have no doubt it's stunning, as it is the only ski resort I've been to where the hotel prices DROP during the ski season...

NZ is a nice place to be, especially around Mount Cook and the glaciers on the south island. Look out for speed cameras though

Sounds nice. With any luck I may be going there next year on a field trip. I also would love to go to Canada, Lake Louise and Banff area. Another place I'll never forget is much closer to home- the Lake District. Stunning views, lovely.

New Zealand South Island. The Mount Cook area is stunning, especially with cloudless skies. The lakes were a deep aqua blue, with the mountains and glaciers in the background, awesome. Anyone not been, save up a visit the place one day.

Agree that Lake Louise just looked white when we were there. It was February though and the skiing was fantastic.

Not sure if this is a "Best Places You've Ever Visietd" Thread or and "I've been to more exotic places than you" Thread!

How about more British places? Loads of people I know spend so much time jetting off that they miss a load of great stuff right on the door step:

Glen Coe
Cape Wrath (NW Coast Scotland)
Lynmouth (Devon)
Waterloo Bridge just after sunset in December
The banks of Lake Bala (Wales) on a summer evening with a cold glass of wine
Stonehenge
Edinburgh during Festival week

A little more national pride wouldn't go amiss!!

(I do agree that Niagra Falls is pretty special though...)

Great Barrier Reef.

I thought it was amazing and you know that each visit will be unique.

I agree that NZ has some beautiful places too.

Will never forget Athens, but that was for sad reasons.

Must also add my first visit to Disneyland aged 10. Every child must visit a Disney resort (fun for adults too).

Aghios Gordios Corfu, never forget watching my apartment burn after the Mrs. lent on the cooker **** and accidentally switched the power round to full, there were bog rolls and aerosol cans on top, we went off to the pool and heard people talking about smoke coming out of windows in our block, I though someone was having a laugh!, bog rolls caught fire and aerosols exploded, this was shortly after arriving, 2 weeks of hell, unable to leave the island until I paid for the damage, needless to say I have never been abroad again since

It's a "places you'll never forget" thread. Read the title Some of us haven't listed places for particularly pleasant reasons...

In fairness, you raise a good point - my father has not been out of the British Isles for 30 years because, as he says, there is enough there to keep him happy. Just as you say; Lake District, a lot of Scotland, Devon, Dorset, Welsh hills, even Oxfordshire, and his own house in the Weald of Kent is just a lovely, lovely place to be.

However, answering the question, I didn't list his house as I've lived there rather than visited, and I didn't list the others as I was so young that I've forgotten them

Cool

Visiting the bottom of Gaping Gill (mahoosive pothole) in the Yorkshire Dales by way of a tiny bosuns chair and some ropes The worst thing was knowing I had to go back up again to get out, scary but a brilliant experience in an amazing place.

Crossing the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the Llangollen Canal on a narrowboat with only about 4 inches of iron between me and certain death, yet another fear inducing moment but magnificent all the same.

Malham Cove in the Dales, awesome place.

Walking over the top of Black Sail Pass in the Lake District and feeling so moved by the beauty of it all that I burst spontaneously into "Jerusalem" at the top of my voice then failed to notice the group of walkers on the other side of the valley walking parallel to me well within earshot, poor sods.

Ios (tiny Greek island) in '91, 'cos it was just mental..

Sunset at Cafe Del Mar in Ibiza '93, 'cos it was just sooo cool.

For me Lake District - Top of Cat Bells above Derwent Water and panoramic views around

Bit further afield - Yosemite Valley, California - MASSIVE - 3/4 mile high sheer granite cliff face and Half Dome glacial formations

Been meaning to go down Gaping Ghyll, only live 20 mins away, but couldn't go last August Bank hols when it was opened to public due to working/going away. Some of the limestone caves in the area look pretty awesome though. Only been in White Scar though (hundreds of times, literally) but have seen cavers pics of others.

places i will never forget in no particular order are
Machu Picchu in Peru - stunning
staying in the Amazon forest in Peru - fantastic
the South island of New Zealand - my favourite scenic country
the Taj Mahal - what a monument for love
the Grand Canyon - the americans can call that awesome
India - the poor people on the streets
Thailand - my favourite country
Teotihuacan, Mexico's biggest ancient city, 2000years old, 50km north east of the city
Sitting in the Rwandan jungle within a few feet of a very large silverback mountain gorilla and watching his youngsters playing, doing somersalts and nicking my cap! An amazingly humbleing experience.

#New York, especially the WTC site - nuff said really.
#Rocky Mountains.
#Bonneville salt flats - was just a surreal kind of place.
#Grand Canyon - watching a thunderstorm on the opposite side.
#Hoover Dam - that's some puddle behind it!
#Death Valley - "how F'ing hot?"
#Las Vegas (generally), and specifically the Bellagio fountains.
#Venice Beach

Actually if truth be told, pretty much the whole of the drive from NY to LA!

Oh and one last one...

#Sat on San-An beach in Ibiza as the sun came up with a young lady I'd met in a club.

John.

Cool

My vote would be in order

1). Oz, Queensland, Noosa great, Whitsundays islands are just stunning, especially when you do the Great barrier reef dive .. Sydney is not bad, and some good wine regions within striking distance such as the Hunter valley and Mudgee

2). 1980 - Rhodesia, part of the commonwealth forces... Gota round the whole country and was totally amazed..pity its now in such crap state..amazing at the time to see the difference between the haves (whites) and have nots (blacks), but at the end of the day most of them are still no better off, to much corruption..and now no one has anything apart from the cronies at the top

3). Cornwall..never ceases to amaze me the spectacular views on the south west coast path..excellent weekend trips

4). Munich, especially the last week of september for the beer fest

dislikes, New York (been loads for business and could not see myself paying out my own money to go there), well the states in general actually, Paris (as new york), London, because i work there but could not live there..

Cheers

Jim

Never forget?

First time seeing NY sky line with twin towers and then seeing view from restaurant on 107th floor. Fortunately I've got it on video.

Lourdes in Southern France. Amazed by how tacky and commercialised the whole town is, very saddened and disappointed.

Kosovo. Amazed at mans inhumanity to fellow humans.

Mexico. Stark contrast after crossing border from wealthy USA to poverty stricken Mexico. Seeing kids begging in the gutter whereas an hours drive up the road is such wealth.

Alps. Never cease to be in awe at beauty of mountains.

Southern Ireland. Very peaceful and very friendly people. Good Guiness as well.

Czech and Slovakia. Felt like travelling back in time when cycling through remote country villages.

Nurburgring. Doing 8 and half minute laps on motorbike and wondering if you would live to see a next lap.

Malta - scuba diving in underwater caves. It is like being on a different planet.

Paul Ricard circuit in the 80's for the Bol D'Or 24 hour bike races. Complete escape from reality for a few days each year.
