Oops sorry m8...dont know why you had the impression i had a scoob?????(maybe because im on a scooby site )...but no..i have a octavia....(*cough* vRS ) .....i know i know not exactly the most economical car to run,but uses less juice than the TEG type R i had before (cant stay out of that vtec ).But in my defence on my runs to birkenhead im averaging(by the trip computer) 36 to 40 mpg...which isnt to shabby for any car really....lucky its chock-ablock and 60 to 70 in long stretches......keeps the MPG up...i might be tempted otherwise

Most of the money spent on petrol is duty. If crude has caused a price increase to this extent, the governemnt should do what they claim and reduce duty accordingly. As usual they have failed to respond. Vote the buggers out.

Car use/ownership rose despite the tax escaltor the Tories introduced, so why should/would any government cut such a guaranteed cash cow?

...I actually DID cycle 4 miles for the indian takeway one night!! Phoned in the order, jumped in the car, and the ****** wouldn't start!
Jumped on my mountain bike, and did the 4 mile round trip to get it. Mind you, made me appreciate it even more once I'd stopped sweating 10 minutes after getting home! (followed by 20 minutes of sweating eating the ******!!).

oh well....i think we are coming to an amicable end to the thread....we will have to agree to disagree on certain points ...no amount linguistic intrepidity (go oooonnn!!!! ) will change either of our minds to much.Better that it ends this way rather than an out and out slanging match .

Don't they deliver round your way?
They only use 50cc bikes here in N. London, so not too bad on fuel

As it happens, I did respond to economic realities, and I now commute in a 1300 N reg Escort Estate. The Scoob is currently driven only to stop the rust setting in, and I let bikes give me my performance buzz.

You seem to be saying that this government being removed will change the current taxation policy on petrol/diesel. It won't.
The car is a major part of life for the majority of adults in this and every other developed country. We live in on a small Island that has too many cars, so they're taxed to ****. Yet the number of cars still grows.
They're on a winner!!

BTW - my original post was to raise the question as to why UK fuel prices are so high when most of (if not all of) Europe is paying less for more.

other countries tax different.. so either:
* tax more on other stuff
or
* spend less on public goods
or a combination of both.

True as above.
You may pay less for fuel in France but VAT is just shy of 20%.
And try buying a beer for less than £4 in a bar and you're doing well.
The UK is a high tax nation but there are higher taxed countries that offer no better quality of life.

I knew I should have done chemistry instead of electronics at uni....
I could have set up a lab in the garage and created my own fuel. I'm sure there are ways of reducing the corrosive effects of alcohol based fuels. If only I knew how.
I'll have to buy an old diesel car instead and make do with cooking oil for now
Seriously though, how can these fuel prices continue when the public have no viable cheap alternative? Buses and Trains will already hike their over-inflated fares using the fuel prices as an excuse. The infrastructure in this country is a mess, yet it's the most expensive.
Take the MRT tube in singapore from one end of the island to the other...and it will cost pennies (60p to be accurate). Do the same on a train in the UK and it costs pounds. So, you pay more for a service that is unreliable, slow, dirty and doesn't take you where you want to go. Fantastic isn't it? And the goverment wonder why people insist on using cars
