Advance Multiplier ?

Hi all,
Thanks again for the replies....
Hi Bob,
I think that when Pat / Pete (ScoobySport) mapped my car they knew it was the JDM STI-7 ecu and mapped accordingly and didn't just throw a UK map on it ? They did another member of ScoobyNet that I know of ecu and he has almost the exact mods and spec car, similar temps and fuel and his car runs det free as per his KL....
I have spoken to one of the top guys at the Esso gas station and he has confirmed that their esso 8000 fuel is at a minimum of 98 RON and can even get as high as 99 RON at times, so I just say 98 RON to be sure....hopefully he can be trusted
Cheers,
Ray

That doesn't mean a thing, as mentioned these cars can need to be very specific at times, for example did you know that the tolerance on compression ratio is plus/minus 0.2 ? Huge variation that could cause real problems to a top limit engine and none at all to the bottom limit when running the same maps.
The car wasn't mapped cos it wasn't there.

Hi Bob,
Ok I see what you are saying......I guess that means in your opinion don't waste my time trying to do another mail in remap.....so I guess my best bet is stick back in the stock ecu and hope everything holds together ?
any mappers taking a vacation to The Bahamas anytime soon ???? LOL
Cheers,
Ray

If Pat has the orignal maps then he ought to be able to take your data logs and extract enough info to adjust what was sent to improve it, its time consuming though and with only Excel to help involves some work but Imho thats the only and best way forward otherwise its a guessing game.
Knowing what is in the base and knock advance maps he can then adjust to suit, assumptions about the fine learning extrapolated from the DD data would have to be made and it might take a couple of goes, i'd offer but I obviously don't have the map to use so its a start again excersise and that means you ecu would need a season ticket ... lol.

Thanks for the honest response Bob, it's a little disappointing though I understand completely just wish it wasn't so tricky...
If you were me and didn't have unlimited funds to be sending ecu's back and forth etc would you just stick back in the original OEM ecu and leave the remmaped ecu sitting in a corner to collect dust ? (maybe I could sell it to someone ???)
Finally, do you think that the factory OEM ecu with decat and proper restrictor to keep boost spike to nothing above 1.2 bar will leave my car fairly safe ?
Cheers,
Ray
PS: Anyone know where Pat from ScoobySport is or how do I get a hold of him ?

Why not buy another ECU from Subaru and constantly have one travelling to you with an improved map? It's probably the only way to get an optimised map for your environment but, to be honest, isn't something I would willingly take on (Bob's a lot wiser than me though ). Either that or a paid holiday in the Bahamas (nor there's something I'd go for!).......

Hi dowser,
I already have TWO ecu's......that is what I am saying above....I have the original untouched ecu that came with the car and then I have the other one I purchased from Subaru Japan and that one was sent direct to ScoobySport to have the mapping done
So my question is, should I just stick back in the original factory mapped ecu and live with stock performance levels plus tiny gains from decat etc or will this thing still be unsafe in stock form ?
Oh yea, I would love to be sending the ecu back and forth except freight alone to and from the UK to The Bahamas would kill me and I may have to pay 50% duty everytime the part comes back into my country.....not very ideal.....was hoping to get things sorted by sending it away one more time but not sure that will work...
Cheers,
Ray

Yup...that seems to be the general consensus....I wish ScoobySport would have been a little more upfront about this at the beginning....
I can live with just the decat but I want to make sure that the car is safe more than anything....

I'm sure they never said at any point that it would work faultlessly from the word go. If you imagine back to the time you ordered, wasn't a certain level of naivety on your part at blame?
Focus on the fact that you have a remappable ECU, and that your engine hasn't gone bang yet......I'm starting to believe that not all det is bad, but a Bahamas based guineau-pig is probably innapropriate.... For me, the big question is the quality of your fuel....unless I could confirm, trying to remap is a stab in the dark the first few attempts.

Richard,
With all due respect I have read the correspondence between ScoobySport and myself and I am sure I would not have jumped into a by-mail map if I was not assured that the map by mail could be done properly......it was excepted by both parties that my results would be less than optimal as far as performance and bhp was concerned but that the safety would be increased over the stock ecu due to mapping it for 98 RON gas and a hot climate.....in fact one of the main reasons I had the ecu remapped was to make it safer since the stock JDM ecu was setup for 100 RON and not quite as hot climate as mine......I was informed that I could also gain some midrange power etc due to my decatted zorst etc and that safety would be a priority.......if I would have been told by the mappers that "yes we can do a remap; however, it may take more than one attempt and you may get det after your remap" I can assure you I would not have gone for the remmap.......simple as that really....
Anyway, my goal here is not to bad mouth anyone as I am sure they did their best for me, all I am saying is that if I would have been given the facts by them a little more straight up as Bob and others have done I may have left the remap alone and saved myself over $1,500 for right now as it turns out a pretty useless ecu.....
Once again...as far as the quality of fuel....after speaking with several heads of Esso Bahamas and Esso Caribbean I was informed that their Esso 8000 gas is normally 99 RON and at a minimal 98.5 RON in the worst case....I have always quoted 98 RON on here etc just to be safe.....now if the Heads of Esso would all lie to me I guess is a question I can't answer but why would they ?
Cheers,
Ray

Fair comment Ray, sorry Running the stock ECU will give you overboost on the decat though, and a dawes will hold the boost too long.

Hi Richard,
No need for apologies I am glad you are enjoying your grappa <----- very dangerous stuff LOL
I had the decat on standard ecu running for a few months with no overboost thanks to changing the restrictor size....it would peak at 1.2 - 1.3 max in 4th and 5th and quickly trail down to less than a bar boost by redline (if I recall correctly). My biggest question now is even though the boost was sorted was the JDM stock ecu that was / is setup for 100 RON fuel giving me det etc as I did not have the KL when I was under that setup.....only one way to find out, going to stick back in the stock ecu, change the restrictor (via adjustable flow valve) make sure no over boost and do some DD logs and see what she looks like
Anyone want a JDM STI7 ecu that needs a remmap ?
Cheers,
Ray

Hi Guys
Just for info, you can change the way the ECU learns the AM up and well as down. It's possible to make it come back very rapidly.
How much do you want for the ECU? I could use a spare
Cheers

Hi Simon,
After much thought I am probably going to hang on to it in the off chance I hear of a skilled mapper taking a vacation to The Bahamas and would be willing to put a little time into my old car......you never know.....besides I may also win the lottery one day and be able to send my ecu back and forth 3 or 4 times until its sorted
Cheers,
Ray

Ray, you could run it and use DD to pull the timing to a level where its happy, however that would probably be defeating the object and losing the gains, running the factory ecu settings with a decent fuel is a good option as you are, boost is within bounds at high revs and it will fuel the engine more as the std maps are pretty rich.
Whats it like in the bahama's ... never been ... lol

Hi Bob,
Sounds good....just finished the ecu swap....only took about 30 mins...not bad for a clown like me
I am going to do some DD logs and play with the adjustable flow valve (restrictor) to make sure no overboost because of full turbo back decat then I will send some logs through
Fingers crossed no det on KL and logs look good
Cheers,
Ray

Hi Bob,
I have done a 4th gear DD run and sent you an email.
Summary: KL only ever shows one amber so far on the stock ecu as compared to the BIG red with maped ecu and Advance Multiplier is staying at 16 on stock ecu vs. dropping to 11 - 8 area on the maped ecu....so it looks like the mapped ecu was not quite right ????.....
Please look at the log and see if everything looks relatively safe
Cheers,
Ray

Car seems to be running quite well and I don't even notice much loss of speed / power etc (maybe becuase the Advance Multiplier had been dropped so low that it was taking away from the increased boost, timing etc and now at 16 car is running happy again ?)

Ray

Ray, I think its still worth the effort to get someone down to map your car. I won't really want to be running ambers in the mid range on a daily basis. If its high end noise then fine, but ambers in the mid range are kinda touch and go. Could very well be onset of det.
Just to be safe.

Hi RT,
I agree but unfortunately I can't force someone to come over here
It's only one amber and it comes on for a split second then goes out before getting close to red line.
Bob has the log and hopefully he can see if things look relatively safe.
Cheers,
Ray
