Just to add.
Having to stay in hosptal overnight did have a couple of plus points.
1. I got pampered by some fit nurses
2. I got put off cigarette smoking for life. The guy in the bed next to me had been a light smoker for about 15 years. He said that the nicotin had affected his system in such a way that parts of his body had turned gangrenus (spelling!) and he was breathing like Darth Vader with a chest infection..........awful

Not had that complaint, but had something similar (don't ask). There was some great stuff they used to pack the wound and encourage healing. It was a type of seaweed derivative by the name of Kaltostat and it really accelerated the healing process and caused no pain when repacking the wound.
It is expensive stuff (see advert) but it was damned effective. It acclerates the healing so the reduced recovery time offsets the high price. Recommended.
