I have a friend who works for a national car magazine and he has told me before that some cars sent to them as 'press cars' are tweaked before they get to them to help with performance figures. In particular he said quite a few of the turbo diesels sent turned out to be chipped. The last one they had which was suspicious was the new mini diesel from BMW. They did a back to back test against another one and the press car was much faster......apparently. Just what I've heard?!

Well here in Ireland (where ex WRC Imprezas come to die) the EVO is ruling the roost in Group N which would be closer to road cars, Subaru continue to sell out there hi-spec models and untill then they wont pull out all the stops in terms of spec untill they feel the pinch in sales... mitsu are on the backfoot in terms of outright sales EVO v WRX/STi which is all Subaru care about...

[rant]

Just to clear up one point which I feel most are unqualified to comment on - The Stig is a world class level racing driver. He had many laps of the circuit in both cars (to get a few fast laps in and decide of things like diff setting..) and although through the hammer head he had U/S this was the fastest way to take the corner to get a good lap time, to scub off more speed and compromise exit speed would mean a slower lap.

He did not "over drive".

[/rant]

The time was ok IMHO, just the Evo did a great lap, cant take that away from it. There are way too many variables to cast an opinion, on the day the 8 was faster, I am sure with a different suspension set up and different ARB / rubber combination the times would be a lot closer.

Thanks BTK.

Thats it!!! As the Evo drinks more fuel no doubt by the time they did the offical laps the Evo was on vapor fumes while the scooby still have half a tank If my figures are correct, the weight of half a tank of fuel over power to weight ratio would make the wr1 4.5secs slower .... that means the wr1 was actually of beaten the Evo if the fuel weight was the same

Case closed..... time to lock this thread

Not quite.... could be the butterfly effect! We all know if a butterfly flaps its wings in Brazil it can change the weather pattern in the UK... therefore when the Scoob was doing its lap that feckin brazilian butterfly must of been flapping its wings like a fiddlers elbow.. thus causing a strong headwind here which obviously slowed the WR1 down!!!!!

I hate that feckin butterfly

Maybe the stig was driving in REVERSE and they played the WR1 footage forwards to give the evo a chance

hows that for a conspiracy theory, at least it would account for the oversteer.

Red face

How many magazine articles and tv shows does it take?

99% of the stuff I have read rates the Evo over the scoob in a like for like comparison e.g. ppp v's FQ300.

Some people on here cannot seem to accept that the Evo is the better car.

Live with it.

p.s. Cannot wait for the barage of comments.

I had noticed that Peugeot don't do a four wheel drive car!! I was pointing out that the previous comment about the owners were only looking at the rally car's performance before they spent 25k+ on a car could not be futher from the point!

Eventually there are some people posting realistic comments about that EVO being alot quiker than the WR1. You will always find quiker cars than what you are driving and theres no point have the hump.
I went from a impreza to an EVO and it is with out doubt alot quicker car, and people saying the impreza's a better everyday car, I can't see it. They are both not eactly comfatable, they are both rubbish on fuel, and the extra couple hundred quid a year for an extra service is not really going to break the bank. They are both superb cars but the EVO is definately quicker

So what? That's the whole point of the World RallyCar rules. You don't need to build a four wheel drive turbocharged roadcar to qualify, all you (as a manufacturer) need is a suitable donor bodyshell and a suitable donor engine. Don't know if you've bothered to look, but Hyundai, Skoda, Citroen and Ford don't make "rally replicas" (in the 4wd turbo) sense of the word either.

On a side note why are they in the WRC to begin with?
Because the Peugeot management feel it's a valuable promotional tool, no more or less. It generates positive media coverage for the Peugeot brand, as well as the 205 (back in the eighties), 206 and now 307 ranges.

Its not as if their flagship car has anything much in-common with a WRC
So what? The success of the WRC cars reflects favourably on the entire Peugeot range. Same with Subaru - note how the marketing for the non-turbo Imprezas, Legacy and Forester makes frequent mention of the "rally derived" transmission, "genes", and whatever other nebulous reference the marketing people can squeeze in.

and as such perspective byres who follow the WRC would look else if they wanted a replica?
PMSL, you can't exactly buy a replica F1 car either, but that hasn't prevented Ford, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Renault and FIAT getting involved, has it?

Start looking beyond your own nose and you might start to work out what's going on here. Peugeot, Ford, Citroen and co don't go rallying to sell cars to the people looking for rally replicas, they sell cars to Joe Average who sits down and watches motorsport on a Sunday afternoon on TV. That, to a large extent, was the reason why the World RallyCar rules were brought in in the first place, as it opened the sport up to a much wider range of manufacturers, and also the reason why rallying has become more "TV friendly" over the past few years.

I have never heard such a load of B******* in all my life, you people just cant take being beat at all, hold your heads up high as you have fantastic cars and stop whinging, everybody who is anybody knows that the evo is a little quicker and sharper on turn-in but the scoob is easier to live with day to day for nearly the same performance, both have + & - points.
I would be whinging if everycar looked and drove the same now that would be s***.
And if it still is sticking in your mind then get out and race one and most of you will find its the level of the driver and not your car as they are that close, and before all you do gooders start that is why you buy these cars and everyone of you has broken the speed limit.
Never mind flame suits..............lets ave it.......!!!!!!!!!!
A point of view from........

I have driven both cars. If I was buying a car purely for track days and a quick burst of adrenaline then I would go for the EVO. But for 97% of that, but easier to live with on a day to day basis, I would (and have) choose a WR1. I have a Yamaha R1 which I use for the odd adrenaline injection when needed !! They're all too fast for British roads anyway, and very few of us can drive anything like Tiff Needell etc.

Why do I never see a testdrive of the Litchfield R25 or the Legacy GT?

How many rallies have the Evos finished this year??
How many Evos will be recalled this year??

I dont see any any Scoobs being recalled. I do see Petters stupid grin on the podium more often than not though

That's why Scoobs out sell the Evo because of reliability and general day to day living which for whatever reason the Evo cannot match.

As for the Litchfield and the Legacy....Oh yes please the sooner the better.
