I wonder if the police laid a hand on his shoulder before arresting him? (Law students would understand this comment.)

It is unbelivable ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
I wonder what they would have done if he wasn't a motorist and didn't hold a driving licence? Jail? Death by firing squad? We really do need to get our priorities in this country sorted out. It is not surprising that public support for the police is dropping when they are intent on criminalising basic law abiding citizens.
I bet this guy's sign was more effective at reducing people's speed than any speed trap.

On the bright side, it's one less ****ty little camper van blighting the roads this summer. Which means one less 3 mile long queue of backed up traffic moving through the west country at 20 mph

Simply shocking
I hope he appeals and gets it overturned. And it really pi$$es me off that they call speed cameras/speed traps, "safety cameras" now!! Time for a change of government asap.

Also - "I happen to know PS CASHMAN. She is based at Farnborough Traffic Dept. This article does not surprise me. I'll say no more. Perhaps yuo could all write to her, at Farnborough Police Station to expresss your feelings?"

Email Tony B Liar and tell him what you think of this. I doubt that it will make much difference, but it will at least let him know why Labour will get a kicking on June 10th.

Just searched the Criminal Justice Act (and all 2003 Acts) for "driving licence", couldn't find anything.
BTW not sure about TB, I would have thought ACPO might be a bit more appropriate.

I was overtaken by a police car today, after it had tailgaited me for about half a mile in a 30 limit (I was doing 30 when it came haring up behind me). The woman driving it tried to overtake once but had to swerve back in as a car was coming the other way. She then overtook me by driving the wrong side of a central traffic island and sped away at what i would guess to be 60-70mph. She didn't have her blue lights on, is this mandatory when responding to an emergency?
About two minutes later, after joining a national limit road I came up behind her again. This time she was tailgaiting a Metro, sitting half way across the double white lines, but could not overtake because of oncoming traffic. This continued for about 3 miles, before we arrived at a roundabout, where the police car turned right, still stuck behind slow moving traffic. It did strike me as particularly bad driving and I would expect the police to pull up anyone driving in a similar fashion.
The question is, do I report her? I wouldn't normally, but after reading about the treatment handed out to the gentleman from Farnborough, I'm in two minds.

Right! I've emailed Bliar.

Please have a look at this news item (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.../ixportal.html)
I am disgusted that this man was charged in the first place and shocked at the punishment he has received.
For some time, I have thought that many speed cameras were positioned more to raise money than to increase road safety and now we have the proof.
Mr. Harding's placard had the effect of slowing drivers at the site of a car boot sale with many pedestrians crossing the road. Surely this increases road safety?
Which would Hampshire Police prefer? Motorists driving safely and within the speed limit or driving at speed and endangering pedestrians but bringing in £60 each time they catch one? Now we have the answer!
I also wonder which would be more effective at slowing motorists' speeds. Mr. Harding's placard or the speed trap? If police didn't catch anyone while Mr. Harding was displaying his placard, we have the answer.
As for the punishment, a one month driving ban and £364 costs is draconian when a local drink driver only gets a fine of £200 with costs, plus a 12 month ban (http://www.beartown.co.uk/newsviewer.asp?ID=15730&Sec=9).
As I said, this whole story disgusts me and gives me no faith in the Police or the British Justice system.

Total disgrace ![Mad](images/smilies/mad.gif)
Forget the fuel price protests, THIS is an issue worth making a protest about!!!
Whenever I pass a mobile speed camera on the A33 (which is just about every sunny, clear day when there is little traffic about - cos that is when all the accidents happen
) I flash oncoming motorists to warn them of the speed trap. Does this mean I am breaking the law??? ![EEK!](images/smilies/eek.gif)
Right, well I'm up for a slow scooby convoy past Farnborough police station! Better not break the law though, make the protest official and all. Mind you we will probably get done for obstructing a police officer trying to cross the road and banned from driving forever

Sprint Chief - technically yes. You could be done for exactly the same thing this guy was convicted of - obstructing an officer in carrying out his duty - or whatever the exact wording is.

They are full of **** though because if I was to pull into a layby in a large lorry and park it right in front of the doors of a police van with camera equipment there is nothing they can do about it if its a public layby, i'm perfectly within my right to park there. If they don't like it they can ******* well move their van and go somewhere else. Yet i'd be nicked if I didn't move it under their say so just because they can make you do whatever they want as they will claim you are obstructing an officer which just gives them the excuse to be power happy little hitlers ![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
And the police wonder why they have a bad reputation and the public hate them

If you flash your lights to warn oncoming drivers believe me you can be done. In fact here in Belfast the police are now playing a nice little double bluff where they set up a speed trap and position cunningly hidden thieves up and down the road from it to entrap anyone who might flash their lights to warn other traffic.
A colleague who was done by one such group of tax collectors was greeted by the friendly opener "don't give my any crap about you knowing the other person, you're being done" when he opened his window to the nice policeman.
They they expect us to support them, sit on juries etc. etc. to uphold justice!

To vote at a polling station you don't need a polling card, you just need something to prove your identity.
If you haven't received either, give your local Council a call in the morning to ask them how you vote.

Although disgusted at this guys treatment, I'm not in the least bit suprised.
I used to live on the A325 in Farnborough, near the Barons BMW garage. There was a speed trap somewhere along that road almost every day. The Farnborough Police seem to be rather keen on this method of revenue generation and it's quite effective because the speed limits along this stretch of road are too low.
I used to warn everybody I could not to speed at all in Farnborough, especially when friends or family where coming to visit. Now that I know I was committing an offence, I shall turn myself in to the authorities in the unlikely event I ever go back to the UK. At least they can't put a ban on my Canadian driving licence.

Does anyone know if there is a fighting fund to support the appeal against this? Appeals to the High Court can be an expensive affair that a pensioner may not be able to fund.
On a similar subject some may find this interesting:
http://pepipoo.com/NewForums2/viewtopic.php?t=1968
Some people are of the view that the ECHR may already have decided in favour of the right to silence when it comes to an NIP. Despite the unsigned loophole being closed Europe may dictate that you don't need to fill the thing in at all. Interesting and there are some test cases in the pipeline so keep the eyes open.

The next thing you know you will have to buy back your property if it is stolen and the Police recover it. Failing to do so will incur a £500 fine and a 6 month driving ban and the Police may then auction off your goods to the highest bidder.

I actually work in Farnborough - 30secs walk from the Police Station that Ms Cashman works at and thus get to run the gauntlet of their speed camera obsession everyday it operates.
The interesting thing is that a Tory councillor mounted a protest infront of one of the talivans a few months ago warning of a speed trap ahead and I haven't heard him being prosecuted yet. Fair play to the guy as his protest was asking the police to devote there resources to tackling other crime.
Mind you, it's about time we stopped *****-footing around with this 'the opinion is speed cameras are more about revenue generation than safety'. Anybody with any common sense knows that the majority of speed traps have NOTHING to do with road safety and EVERYTHING to do with revenue generation.
I get totally brassed off hearing how drunk/drug-drivers, those without insurance, licenses etc get let off with pitiful sentences whereas those caught speeding invariably have the full wrath the law placed on them. Figures now say that only 3% of accidents are a direct result of exceeding a posted speed limit - time to tackle the other 97% with the same zeal me thinks (but hey, no money to be made from that approach).
