Am keeping the Escort for a bit of fun/weekend toy + to annoy the neighbours
I have about 4 weeks to get it finally prepared for it's first hillclimb at Loton Park (Shrewsbury). I will be in the 2000cc - 3000cc Class as the car has the full X pack engine conversion of 2100cc.

Lucky lucky lucky B god those were the days, always wanted a RS2 but couldn't insure one at the time, now theres hardly any good ones left. Had to make do with a 1300, only 17 yrs old, went ok once it had a Kent Cam flowed head and 32/36 Weber on it the local XR2 brigade didn't like it so much though

First time out for the RS (in anger) will be on Sunday 11th of July - website for information on Loton Park is
www.hdlcc.com
The day is a National B day so plenty of saloons (Cosworths, Imprezas, Evos, Escorts etc.
I have been workig on the car this weekend (gradually stripping most of the trim out).
Had 5 of my neighbours in my garage last night reminising about Escorts - a right laugh

Rik,
Hello mate how are you?
Trust Karen is well......
The car changing has to stop right now - Sarah has a fit every time I change, but it keep me happy and I can hide in the garage when she goes off on one.
I went for the RS because I really got bitten by the hillclimbing bug, and it is difficult to use your everyday car as a competition car.
Should have kept my old 1994 WRX.................hindsight
PS RS is going to Aldon Automotive for a rolling road tune.

At the moment it's got a 2.1 Burton engine with a 5 speed box. I'm thinking of replacing it with a cossie engine or maybe a 2 litre Zetec which seems to be a popular conversation at the moment on the classic Ford scene.
Ford Fair is in August so hopefully there will be plenty of bits & bobs I can buy!

Glad things are progressing with the hillclimbing. We really must get over to see you in action sometime soon.
Your very own cheerleader squad.
Otherwise, I might just keep you informed of any track outings we have and see if you're free too.
Cheers,
Rich.

I'm not sure what axle you could use but maybe the Capri ones maybe wider? I think it could be a English Axle. I've got the standard with 7x15 Fox Alloys with a extra wheel spacer which is ok, but could be bigger. I've uprated my front discs & calipers and it has improved braking a lot. But I won't be able to use 13's anymore.
It might be worth getting the Classic Ford magazine. It's in most major mag shops. It's full of useful info and there are many specialised companies now that cater for mk1 & 2 escorts.

Just get a cossie lump.
1. Raise Compression
2. Dump the turbo, inlet plenum, exhaust manifold.
3. Install nice 48mm thottle bodies with long wide trumpets.
Hey presto - 2.0 16v with the right name. Some of the Westi guys run NA cossie engines and get close to 280bhp without a turbo. I guess it depends if you need to meet any rules for the class you intend to run in.
Try and speak to Dingy - he will point you in the right direction I think.
Rodger Clarke Motorsport also took an ex-works escort cossie WRC car and converted it to RWD and NA Cossie engine. It got shipped to some mad nutter in barbados.

Cosworth lump is what I want - but it will have to wait until later in the year.
The RS has the 2.1 X pack engine conversion and pulls beautifully - no let up until the rev needle is almost all the way round to zero.
Classic Ford is great for sourcing parts - just found a brand new set of rear lamp clusters for £30.00!

What gearbox have you got in it? I had to do the 5 speed convertion a couple of years ago after my four speed what "bang" on the M25. I had a spare 5 speed box from a buddle of parts i bought from a guy. It's not bad and ok for cruising along the motorway, but it's heavier and 1st gear was acceleration is a tad sluggish.

You might find this thread of some interest, lists the options available on X-packs etc.

Absolutely love the old escorts, which most people find odd from a 19 year old. Borrowed a mates Mk2 RS2000, what fun. Always preferred the Mk1 Mexico, would love to find one in decent condition.

Hillclimbing
The hillclimb is "relatively" non damaging - only a 60 second sprint and only one car on track.
If the car was mint I would not even think about competing, but it is a bit rough around the edges, and most parts to repair (heaven for bid I bend it) are readily available + not too expensive.
Did my first season last year in an Impreza and Evo 6, and though it best to get a cheaper car that was strong.
Looked at a fre 205 GTi's but really wanted rear wheel drive.
Don't worry I will be careful - just doing the hillclimbing thing for a bit of fun.
The class I an in on the 11th of July is made up of TR7s, 205 and 309 GTis.
