Calling people "sad gits" for not supporting a team outwith their own country is a bit OTT.

For instance, when it comes to football, FIFA/UEFA/whoever have decided that Great Britain/United Kingdom can have separate national football teams for each country (ie, Scotland, Wales, N.Ireland and another one whose name I often forget). The England team does not draw on players from Scotland/Wales/N.Ireland, so people don't necessarily have an interest in a team not containing any of their own people.

Therefore, given this segregation of nationalities when it comes to football, people are free to make their own choice as to which other country they support in a competition. When their first selection is their own country, it doesn't necessarily follow their next selection should be another country in the UK.

For instance, a lot of Celtic fans will probably have more reason to follow Sweden in Euro 2004 - there are more Celtic players in the Swedish team than in the English team

If, however, there was a UK national football team, then it would be natural to expect all those within the UK to support that team.

Perhaps because Welsh teams ordinarily are not in the same leagues as played in by English teams - so there is no need to dislike a welsh team.

ie, if you are a ManU fan, supporting Barry Town is not a disservice to ManU!

Supporting England if you are a Wales fan is completely different! It is disloyalty to your own side

Redkop,

Out of interest, if the Champions League final was between Man U & Glasgow Celtic, who would you support? The team from your own country I assume?

Celtic only because ManU are Liverpool's greatest adversaries. Plus, I am a closet Celtic fan. So perhaps, if you had chosen 2 different teams, my answer would have been different

Why do you think I chose those teams though

Now apply your logic to Scottish people supporting England, and you may now see why your comments on all UK people supporting England seem a bit OTT. To call it "bigotry" is 100% wrong.

Touche, as they say

Disagree! IMO if you are a British citizen, you support a 'British' team regardless. All in my opinion of course. Why become a Croatian or a French supporter? Sounds like the ol' green eye jealousy to me.

So why do you not support an English team in my above example of ManU and Celtic? Why become a Celtic supporter? You actively DO NOT support ManU it seems, so you'd support anyone that they played against?????

The case is exactly the same. We're just expanding the geographic boundaries

Anyway, it's not jealousy at all. It's just a natural & competitive age-old rivalrly.

Oh, and remember, Scotland have qualified for MORE world cup finals than England ever have.....

So if I were to say to you :

IMO if you are a English citizen, you support a 'English' team regardless
...how is that any different, and therefore, why would you support Celtic if they were playing ManU?

...or even!!!

IMO if you are a Liverpool citizen, you support a 'Liverpool' team regardless

See above... no Liverpool supporter would get behind Man U playing against another British team. Fact!

Redkop isn't a Liverpool citezin

Usually quite a few Scottish people take offence at being called British. I'm not taking offence, just stating that I am of Scottish blood and that is what I will be called! Don't want to be associated in anyway whatsoever with the English in that way, we are a totally different breed (Whilst on the subject of football, I will use our footie fans as an example! Maybe not the best looking bunch but they are bloody well behaved )!!!!!!

I'm not really a footie fan either, but I went to France 98 as our company were sponsoring it. What a fecking laugh - shame the fun was interrupted by having to watch 22 guys on a grass field! HONESTLY! The Tartan Army IS the tops. Not one single bit of trouble.

Elgin is in Scotland (the people there lost their marbles, hence why they are in the stadium).

I've never seen an Englishman at a Scotland match. I think that's about the only thing that'd get the Tartan Army angry

France did a good job and finally, once again, we choked.

Question for the Scots here - which Group are you in actually?
Or are you so ashamed of being beaten 66-nil by the Dutch that you aren't going to bother turning up to your group matches...
