Perseption is the mother of all f**k up's!!

Support for you' re team is everything, on the field, on the telly where ever
One of the main reasons England do so well IMHO, so why slate them for getting behind their team?
They put it before the European Elections ffs!!
England "do" know more, they know how to win (unfortunately not last night)

Mayby if our team had a bit of arrogance about them we would be winning some games.

Claire - nope, don't mind not at all. Why would i/we??

But please tell me why Scottish people felt the need to wear Brazil shirts during our crunch game in the last World Cup? In another bit of "you might not believe me but it's true" style, the English would never do that to Scotland, never. Dunno what the Scots' problem towards the English is - never have done.

Cool

I have worked extensively in Edinburgh for the last 5 years, and I have to say that generally, the Scots are amongst the most most bigotted narrow minded people I have met.

That's not to say they are not nice people, I have a good laugh with them, they are decent enough. However, bring up the subject of the English and invariable they let loose with a tirade of vitriole and resentment that beggars belief!

What is the problem? They go on about English opression (go and live in China, see what opression really is like). They go on about the media obsession with English sport. Well, sorry, but the English account for about 45 million of the total UK population, so it's not really surprising then is it?

What gets me is how they go on about how the English treat them so badly, like they are some occupied country! Just remember that you signed the act of union willingly, you were not invaded! You signed away your own hard fought independence for financial reasons and in the hope that you may wield some power. As for being governed by London, the capital has to be somewhere, so just get over it!

You also have a considerable budget deficit, so if you did become independant, your taxes would rise alarmingly. Yes, those nasty English support you financially too!

I don't think you really know why you hate the English, it's just instilled in you from childhood.

For the record, I am Welsh (actually, I consider myself to be British first)

We know we are ****!

PMSL ajm, I was waiting for that

Telboy, I knew no one would mind, just trying to lighten the thread a bit

The problem 'most' Scottish people have against the English team is the arrogance and media hype that surround them. Also, with some people this goes a bit further towards the whole issue Diablo raised about England being an oppressive nation. Personally, I really didn't care less until the whole 'Scotland are crap' keek started. I'll give back as good as I get. We might have a **** team, but I am fooking proud to be what I am.

http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=335796

says it all really.

The Scotts really do hate the English no matter what any of them say on this thread.

But you know what they say little things please little minds, they obvioulsy have such boring lifes they need to take out there frustration on the English.

I used to have a Scottish girlfriend and have Scottish friends and spent all weekend at the Nürburgring with a scottish girl, so there is no hatred from me.

All the scots are saying ha ha it is just banter live with it but soory it might be banter if there was one thread but there are threads in General, NSR, Sport and the Scotland forum, it is no longer friendly banter.

Many of you seem to forget this is football we're talking about. A game.

How many of you are ardent footie supporters and go to matches on a regular basis? Is banter & baiting the opposition not part of the "experience"? ie, if you're a liverpool fan at a ManU match, you're bound to have a bit of banter with the opposing side, yes?

That's all this is surely.....

The English do take it all quite seriously though. After all, they had a lot more to lose. Their team is built up with some of what are supposed to be the best players in the world.

Why do you think the supporters always end up in a brawl? Shows how serious it is to them. The Tartan Army just go and have a drink and celebrate no matter what the result....

...and of course we don't hate English people.

We enjoy a bit of banter when it comes to the game of football. That doesn't mean we therefore hate english people at all other times?!
It's because we know how to wind people up easily

Right then... i seem to remember one occasion where England were up against someone else. You sat there the whole game slagging the england team and cheering on the other team. Constantly rambling on about Scotland blah blah blah. To be honest i wasnt listening to you half the time ..You take it a little too far im my opinion.

People just don't want to hear how scotland should be able to do 'this and that'. Fecking whine whine whine.... Do you see anyone other scot's on this thread making such a fuss about nothing?

Claire did you find the same narrow bigotry from English people towards you, that the Scots chuck at us, while you were living in Sheffield?

Im not going to argue with you.. waste of time since you are always wrong

You're sad to the bone with the patrionism thing, wrapping a scotland flag round yourself at the rally last year for example. Tryin to get me to put Scotland flags on my number plates.. why the **** would i do that when im not Scottish?

I don't hate Scottish people, but i do hate the constant whining... gets very irritating after a while.

LOL Wurzel. It is all in good jest. I changed my location last night

I don't hate the English. Never have done. I have English relatives, lived in Sheffield for some time and my best mates are English (I am actually going down to visit them this weekend) . Yes I am baiting, and yes I am enjoying it. Most of us are having a laugh about it, it's only a game. If it really offends you that much I will change my location.

The English have worked hard for this, all respect to them. But don't you think 'Are you Scotland in disguise?' is a little over the top? If they can do it, so can I

Seems a shame that newspapers can be so instrumental in forming a nation's opinions then. The Welsh and Irish don't (as far as i know) go to such lengths to distance themselves from us...

Redkop, you said last night :

no Liverpool supporter would get behind Man U playing against another British team. Fact!
We are talking about Scotland v England in the context of football here. Not anything else. Just as you talk about Liverpool v ManU.

If you want to call it bigotry, then do so, but then you are also a bigot when it comes to the above example.

Bigotry is all encompassing hatred....not just in the context of a wee game of football. This is more like age-old rivalry.

I used to get the **** taken from mates and colleagues, but it was all in good humor. We once had a caber tossing competition in my mates back graden last summer -- I lost to an Englishman by the way!

Chris, there were hundreds of Scots down there, for example, Colin McRae. You didn't think it was so sad then, but now others are piping up you're having a dig (the word sheep springs to mind). So are the English sad for flying their English flags during Euro 2004, or is that a different kettle of fish?! Is it really that bad to be patriotic?!

Never said it wasn't innifensive to display a Scottish Flag in England, but didn't realise that was an issue here.

You've just said it - YOUR national teams. They are not OUR national teams.

Why should we support them? Any more than we should support, say, any other European Union team?

I'm not saying I agree with it - but why should it be so hard for you to understand?

Its a catch 22. The irony is that its probably the arrogance of your teams that makes them more successful.

But what it all comes down to is that everyone likes to see the loudmouth silenced.

The loudmouth in this case being the media frenzy that surrounds the England team abroad.

When you have to put up with years of this, it gets a bit tiring, hence the doesn't matter who wins as long as its not the English National Team.

The UK is in a very different position to most of the rest of the world, in that we have British teams for some competitions and National teams for others. I don't think many (if any) other nations have that.

What you should be aware of is that Scotland will be behind an English club in European Football Competition, for example, or an English tennis player at Wimbeldon, or an English motor racing driver. Just not the England team.

So its not that we hate the English as individuals, far from it. "Our" issue is with "England the Team" and the hype and arrogance that surrounds it.

And, in a sense you arrogance in thinking we should support (or at least be neutral) towards England the Team without even trying to accept that people will have very differing views that they are quite entitled to hold.

D
