As for the Scots - there are those who don't care for the English, but then how often do we have the "sorry mate, don't accept no funny money" comment down South when trying to spend a Scottish £10 note, or have 'hilarious' racial stereotypes about mean Scots, or, indeed, suffer the stupidity of London-centric journalists in seach of the perfect deep-fried Mars Bar.

Ooooh, and whilst we are on the subject of why it is so effing great to be scottish:

I am doing a little research for work at the moment, and have come across this little beauty:

Universities account for only a small share of the UK's patents each year. The highest proportion is in Scotland.*

*Taken from the Lambert Review of Business-University Collaboration - Final report December 2003 for and on behalf of HM treasury.

"only a SMALL share of UK patents" i wonder where all the other patents come from?

Pity great scottish 'inventors' like logie baird and bell have now been found not to the actual inventors of the tv and telephone.

The guy I work beside has something like 45 patents to his name. In fact, there's a hell of a lot of people in my office who hold patents. My mum's friend has patents to his name too.

Oh look, they all live & work in Edinburgh

Ok i thought you might know where all the other patents come from?? its something i'm interested in.

I do remember they did a study in Japan on inventions and the UK had the largest amount in the last hundred years or so than any other nation .So i guess that something we all should be proud of.

The whole notion of 'Scottishness' as we understand it today - Walter Scott(ishness) is a Victorian invention. Victoria was English, and married to a German.

Tartan is Flemish, the Kilt was invented by a Lancastrian iron master (apparently), and Haggis is French. So it's no surprise then to learn that Mel Gibson is a Pacific Rimmer. "will ye no toss ma kaber laddie?"

Yeah you're right! We should all be proud of it!

I found an online report* (see page 3, the summary, note 4). Since 2001 that number has increased! I am looking for a table with the results, I'm not entirely sure what the exact totals are off the top of my head but I can get my hands on the info when I get into the office tomorrow if you still want it!

*managed to **** that up didn't I!!

Talking LOL

The average Englishman in the home he calls his castle, slips into his national costume, a shabby raincoat, patented by Charles Mackintosh from Glasgow, SCOTLAND. En route to his office he strides along an English lane surfaced by John Macadam of Ayr, SCOTLAND. Sometimes he drives an English car fitted with tyres invented by John Boyd Dunlop of Dreghorn, SCOTLAND. At the office he receives the mail, bearing adhesive stamps invented by John Chalmers of Dundee, SCOTLAND. During the day he uses the telephone, invented by Alexander Graham Bell, born in Edinburgh, SCOTLAND. At home in the evening, his daughter pedals her bicycle invented by blacksmith Kirkpatrick Macmillan of Dumfries, SCOTLAND. He watches the news on television, invented by John Logie Baird of Helensburgh, SCOTLAND, and hears an item about the U.S. Navy, founded by John Paul Jones of Kirkbean, SCOTLAND. He has by now been reminded too much of SCOTLAND and in desperation he picks up the bible, only to find that the first man mentioned in the good book is a SCOT, King James VI, who authorised its translation. Nowhere can an Englishman escape the ingenuity of the SCOTS. He could take to drink, but the SCOTS make the best in the world. He could take a rifle and end it all, but the breech-loading rifle was invented by Captain Patrick Ferguson of Pitfours, SCOTLAND. If he escaped death, he could find himself on an operating table, being injected with penicillin, discovered by Alexander Fleming of Darvel, SCOTLAND, and given an anaesthetic, discovered by Sir James Young Simpson of Bathgate, SCOTLAND. On coming out of the anaesthetic he would find no comfort in learning that he was as safe as the Bank of England, founded by William Paterson of Dumfries, SCOTLAND. Perhaps his only remaining hope would be to get a transfusion of guid SCOTTISH blood, which would entitle him to ask

''WHA'S LIKE US ? GIE FEW,,AND THEY'RE AW DEID!"

- Ok, so the TV and telephone are under dispute, but its not been proven either way

And if Scotland was given to the Spanish, it can't be owned by England

So get that right up ye!

Made me chuckle - in last night's Evening Standard, Braveheart topped a poll for most patriotic film released in the UK, beating Battle of Britain, The Great Escape and so on.

Ah Diablo, very good. So much ingenuity and shrewdness by you Scots, but still you weren't clever enough to avoid the English being your masters!

Diablo - We Actually own Spain too - We spanked them long before we spanked the sweaties

Swing low ...

ps Moses - I'd rather be a Frenchman than a Tim - so stick that up your Kilt and fiddle with ya sporran

pps I know I can stick my chariot up my **** - still waiting for something original from the Jocks - I expected better - you've had thousands of years practising your English "banter"

ppps Good luck scotland in qualifying for the Next World Cup - Major footie events without the Tartan Army are just not the same

pppps Shame you have to bring your footie team though

ppppps So what have the Jocks given us in the last 50 years - it's all very well bleating on about the past - you're starting to sound very English.

pppppps Did I mention that WE won the World cup in 1966 - by which time all your Inventors were DEEEEEEED

Ditto - thing is, I feel neither Scottish nor English, so probably one of those increasingly few people who are quite happy and proud to be British.

Scotland placed on a major flood alert. All areas of Scotland were last night placed on high alert as a major flood is expected this morning. This is thought to have been caused by most of Scotland pishing themselves laughing at the England result.

Come on Geezer - Credit where credit is due

Scotland recently beat the mighty Trinidad & Tobago to claim joint 55th in the FiFa world Rankings with Hoduras and pipping Bahrain to 57th .

And Bahrain has a population of 56,000,000 as we all know - so Scotland are even better
