For your budget how about a TVR Chimeara 4.5 or 5.0 my friends brother has just got the 4.5 and that V8 sounds gorgeous!

Or how about a TVR Griffith the 500 is still made now I think, if you don't mind an older car and can get a hold of one the 430/4.3 V8 Big Valve pre-cat is the one to go for

What about an Elise ! An S1 111s is probably better to drive than any of the others mentioned [Although I havent drive the Z3M ] - if its just a fun car you are after you cant go wrong.

S2000 - possibly, but not a great fan at the moment.

TVR's - Always has been a dream but don't think I'd want to live with the reliability issues, or the image of a TVR driver standing on the hard shoulder with the bonnet up!

Lotus Elise - far too uncomfortable and basic I'm afriad.... I like the luxuriuous swathes of heated leather in the beemer along with all the electronic goodies!

there are only two 2-seaters worth considering aren't there?

if you can afford it get an Aston.
if not get an mx5

anything in between is either a waste of money (compared to mx5) or a compramise (compared to an Aston)

Sounds like you've decided already
Right, for and against the ZM.....

For -:
Sweet engine
Huge power
Looks
Build quality
Luxuries (leather etc)
Good write ups
Rear wheel drive
Relatively affordable (compared to Boxster)

Against -:
Image

Thats it?

Any takers?

Baks, any pics of yours mate? What colour/year etc?

i assumed you had fettled with the charger, but didn't realise from the list you gave (actually you did say pulley )

I wanted to get an 32, but they were a little out of my range too. Would have been lovely !
What is your resale looking like after this convert ?

a friends next door neighbour has just taken a massive kick on the bo11ocks on a Z3M! Boxsters are absolutely everywhere.
Has to be the S2000 - why? cos I have one

Why no Elise/VX220 in that pile? TT?

Already been suggested.
Far too much of a hardcore "track car", not really appealing to rack 12000 miles a year onto!

TT?
Shhhhhhhhhh!

Don't say TT on ScoobyNet

TT is actually very close to the BMW.

when you buy a convertible outright performance doesnt matter but image does....hence the car needs to be able to go quick but wont actually go quick.

hence why a Z3M is better than a Z3 but an elise is pointless......how cool is an elise when it gets really hot and your stuck like a sweaty pig?

I had a Chim 4.5 last year, mate had a Z3M, mate this yr has a TT.......if i had to pick a 2 seater for road use it would be (at sub 20k money) the TT or an older Z3M.

chim falls apart, honda is to manic for cruising and the rest are to much money.

i plan to get a softtop in dec and will be looking at 26k ish- i'll go for the Z4 3.0 (having had a BMW they are clearly a long way ahead of anything else as a car ownership package)

I disagree on the last comment, the new SLK is superb compared to the Z4.

Just IMO though

the new SLK is absolutely luuuvly ! seen quite a few about a few weeks ago in Monaco. i think they nailed it this time with the looks.

but have to agree with previous comments - as an allrounder, you can't beat the ZM3 - not biased again obviously

No it isn't, it is great for pootling around, great for ragging the **** of it ...
I would suggest you drive one.

How the TT has earnt it reputation is beyond me, yes they are everywhere but for the money they are great cars. I think they look pretty damn good and came close to getting one.

These Subarus maybe quick but some of you guys need to get out more

Doesn't the DB9 cabrio fit into that category - or is it a 4-seater? That said, it's over 100 grand

You can still get a Griffith of Chimera for that price. I'd rather have one of those than a Boxter or M-roadster tbh. Sounds far better, and I'd say they have a touch more character

You need all the character you can get for a weekend looney tune car, but for those wet Friday m'way jaunts and occasional drives to important meetings, you want something that'll start and not spit you into the verge with every application of the power. What you use the car for will decide whether you go the TVR/Elise route or the Beemer/Boxster way.

I remember taking my Caterham to a meeting one summer Friday (I was en route somewhere for the weekend). I turned up with 2 lovely sweat lines down the front of my workshirt where the harnesses had clamped me shut and my hair looked like Edward Scissorhands. During the meeting bits of grit kept falling out of my hair and for the first 25 minutes I kept saying "Eh? What?" to everything that was said as half an hour without doors and a competition exhaust had made me deaf!

also i loved the bmw warrenty, covers nearly everything on the car, and can be renewed for around £400 per year up to 100,000 miles, just make sure the car has not yet the bmw warrenty expire as they will not renew it after that.

DO NOT GET A TVR at that money...it will have no air con and it will fall apart.

you lot need to take a walk round a TVR close up...they are KITS.

So the BMW is still the best option for you mate

I went through this same process when finding something for myself. Kept coming back round in circles though
