I remember as a kid being up on a hill somewhere in the west country in the late 70's watching one of these awesome machines do its thing, fantastic to hear it will fly again.

If they asked I would be leaving black lines down the road to get there

You are right about the Lightning performance Brit in Japan, I swapped flights with a guy in Singapore and gave him a flight in a Vulcan in exchange for a ride in a Lightning. I enjoyed every minute and the acceleration and rate of climb was amazing. The "ten ton" speed bit was good too. The Vulcan could out turn any fighter at 40K feet though and they could never shoot us down with a front gun attack. I think it was significant that when this guy got the hang of the Vulcan, it was all we could do to get him to let go of the controls and get out of the aircraft. He loved it!

As you said it was the outrageous performance of such a big machine, it should never have been able to do what it could, but it did it all with ease. It had a fairly low "G" limit compared to a fighter of course, but you could get it to all the extreme angles which is what impressed at a display as well as the mindbending noise at full power.

Brendan, its not impossible I did that display at Biggin Hill that you saw, I seem to remember getting it into that hole in the ground before the main runway just for the hell of it. I also did a beat up at Thruxton on the way since I was going there the next day!

Happy days!

I have every single version of the 1/144th scale Vulcan ever done by Corgi.

They even did one of the Sarfend relic. They must have been desperate for new ideas by then.

WELL happy that Vulcan is to fly again. I remember seeing her at the IAT at fairford a few years back. Awesome performance. Noise beyond description, then total silence. and the tight "How the hell is it staying up there?" turns were something else.
I hope its flying very soon. I will be there when it is. You can guarantee it.

Me me me! I saw the Vulcan at Waddington on Saturday, albeit on the ground, but would love to see it fly, I also chucked a few coppers into the fund

Nat, thanks for posting the video clip at the top of this thread

Absolute magic the old girls going to fly once more, don’t know about letting Leslie fly her though, Some of these old jockey’s have far to many memories of pulling high G and might want to have another goat it!!

Leslie I bet you used to give the ground Eng’s nightmares when they passed a F700 to you??

Sirfizzalot, the model used in the Bond film was on display at Waddington

Nat, I was thinking the same thing, maybe there is hope for the Lightning aswell now, that would be cool, a Lightning and Vulcan flyby, imagine the noise form the car alarms after that!

Afterburners? They seem to cause all sorts of legal problems with old aircraft, but I don't know if it's the issue there.

Sat in the Vulcan at Duxford and remembered thinking how cramped it was - and wondering how the pilots ever saw where the h*ll they were going through the tiny windows.

Oooo, now I remember reading something on pprune about that. (a search will probably answer), but IIRC

One has done a **** load of hours and basically the airframe is fooked so it is not *really* air worthy, but the other...... it's classed as a complex aircraft IIIRC, and the CAA won't (or are not very keen to) let it fly unless the OEM's are involved in making sure it's air worthy. (i.e the Vulcan is backed up by the people who made it). Much the same problem as concorde. Of course I could be wrong, but that's how I remember it.

Haven't given up on seeing one fly again though, I'm sure somebody keep trying. I must visit Kemble one day !!!!

Has that been confirmed? I'm reading the thread on the site now but there's nothing saying that she's definatly off to do engine runs, although I admit it's highly likely.

First saw, or should i say, first heard, then saw the Vulcan back in 1977 at Mildenhall airbase, doing the near on vertical climb

Last time i saw it was mid 80's at daedelus (sp) airbase at Lee on Solent.

The starfighters were there as well there pretty awesome too, but nothing comes close to the howl of those massive engines on the Vulcan being given some welly

Cant wait

Pmsl at the vid link..... the woman at 00:13 "you cant hear it at all" just before it opens the throttles for a climbout

understatement or what

I'm planning to go next year, while I'm sort of in the right part of the world

I've contacted them for prices but heard nothing back yet
I'm currently figuring that whatever the cost it will be worth it

I'll keep y'all informed

More than once!

I hear it has had a bit of a setback-don't know what yet but they say the test flight has been postponed for a while.

Well i used to look at it very carefully before I signed for it, but when I signed the 'plane back in I used to take pleasure in returning it as serviceable as possible.
