The starfighters were there as well there pretty awesome too, but nothing comes close to the howl of those massive engines on the Vulcan being given some welly

Cant wait

Pmsl at the vid link..... the woman at 00:13 "you cant hear it at all" just before it opens the throttles for a climbout

I checked my log books Mart but I did not fly that display at Mildenhall in '77. I was just finishing an instructing tour on the Canberra before going back onto the Vulcan then I think. The Vulcans with the later engines could go truly vertical off the runway at display fuel weight by the way, 558 has got the earlier engines but the aircraft will be about 9 tons lighter so it should go like a scalded cat! I did a display at Yeovilton one year when the Starfighters were there-from the German Air Force. The solo display chap tried to do a tight final turn on to the runway which was a mistake because he spun in and was killed

Astraboy.

I did do a display at the IAT, if you know the year I could tell you if I was flying at that one.

I hear the the CAA will not permit the Vulcan to do much more that a level flypast at displays now. That is a terrible shame if it is true, the whole point of a Vulcan display was the manoeuvres it could do! Maybe they will change their minds after a while.

No did not meet him, but we were given a free lobster lunch by the financial manager of Lloyds who were sponsoring the display.

Good to hear that again, looks like it still has the earlier engines fitted.

I heard it was 7 new ones-still crated up and they found them at a "scrappy's" somewhere! Should be enough to keep her going for long enough with the original engines as well. Those 200's have a hell of a howl at max RPM!

Top thread

I will keep an eye on this, I would certainly go to see it fly. Never seen one in real life before but its one of the last great bombers (not sure if that sounds very PC).

Only seen it on Thunderball.

Great pics on that link too.

Has anyone read 'Vulcan 607' by Rowland White? I'm reading it now and it's a cracking book about the ambitious Vulcan mission to bomb the runway at Port Stanley during the Falklands conflict

Why are you worried about PC when it comes to defending the country?

Jesus did you realise how liberal that quote was or is !!!!

That's perhap's why we don't have more cold war jet's in the Air because the goverment / lottery heritage fund's think it's un P.C to plash the cash on former weapon's.
But on the the other hand if you want a million pound clubhouse for your gay and lesbian rugby club no problem's

Sorry to sound like Alf Garnett

P.s I've heard she's finally flight ready

As I promised, I did a bit of research and talked to a friend who knows a bit.

They have done full power engine runs and have sorted minor problems such as a small fuel leak etc. They were held up by return of some vital components from the makers where they were sent for refurbishing.

As you can imagine, it is a very complicated aircraft which has not flown since 1993. The engineers are engaged in a long series of detail checks to make sure all is on top line before it is pointed towards the sky. It will need full flight test procedures including fast taxi checks etc. I am convinced personally that she will fly and maybe not too long in the future.

If I was in charge of the restoration, I would not be rushing the engineers in the job and I would not announce the day of the initial test flight either.

One of the hydraulic pipes split and so they have and to remove number 3 engine to get at the leak. Has all been fixed now. Looks like they are just waiting on 500 work cards to be completed before they start taxi runs.

I still remember the experience of seeing one of these take off at stupid angles many many years ago. For me, the whole point would be to see it fly showing what it can do, not what some bureaucrat thinks it should be limited to

Really hope to see one in the air again

They weren't actually stupid angles. The performance of the aircraft at display fuel weight would allow it to leave the runway in a true vertical climb up to 3000 feet+. The handling was so good that it could then do a combination rolling stall turn at low speed back to the horizontal in safety.

I doubt that we shall see it do that sort of thing again due to the restrictions placed on it by the CAA.
