Took mine to the local bus station for it's test, and couldn't understand why they had not put it on the rollers, asked afterwards and they had taken it up and down the station using the meter, didn't have enough knowledge at the time to question it but asked a pal who is an MOT tester and he confirmed they followed the correct procedure by not using the rollers.

Cheers

If the 'muppet' doesn't know how to CORRECTLY test these cars then they shouldn't be qualified as an MOT tester...period.

The 'Tapley meter' basically measures negative 'G' force when you brake.

and for the record i always give the customer the choice to come out on 'road test' with me when testing the brakes this way...as some S/N members will already know

look here: http://www.pwds.co.uk/tapley/products.htm

they normally look like no.1 or 3.

They are called decelerometer, but are commonly called tapley metres as that's who makes them (like someone calling a knife a stanley )

Your MOT tester is insured, the speed they reach will NEVER exceed 30mph in the test and it'll take 5mins at the most (depending how far the nearest empty/clear stretch of raod that's not on a hill).

You, do know, MOT testers do get the chance to test Ferraris, Lamboghinis, Zondas, Bentleys etc....your scooby is pretty boring and mundane in comparison

edit: steve beat me to it whilst I was digging out the link

Because car manufacturers are not interested in different countries and the way they carry out their safety tests.
The VI is constantly rewriting test methods when new cars come onto the market because certain components are not easily testable using the current testing standards.
The Fiat Punto is one example...the onboard ECU will not allow to rev the engine out of gear to do the 'Cat test',according to Fiat you have to drive the car in gear with the wheels off the groung which is a BIG NO NO on the MOT test.

The MOT test in this country is unique and now that we apart of Europe, the powers that be are trying to get all EU countries to have a 'uniform' test, which basically means if your MOT test runs out while you are abroad(within the EU) then you can have your car tested in that country and the pass certificate will stand as legal in this country!!

This is the future.....would you then trust an unknown EU garage to correctly test your car?

Had mine tested a bout 1 month ago.
as you say the guy took it 1/2 mile up road 30mph then stamp on it.
then same with hand brake.
They do not go far as they have to specify a stretch of road to test on.
passed !
the guy got out and said **** ive never had decelerometer go so high!
godspeed conversion
although he passed it saying handbrake is weak on 1 side.
rollers would have failed it as i found nearside not working at all.

look at your owners manual. Look up being towed when broken down and work it out for your self.

It doesn't matter that a Discovery went on rollers - they only have an expected life of 5 years anyway!!

So many bits snap, fall off and make distressing noises that one more thing hardly merits concern!!

In Norn Iron we have dedicated government test centres with only 2 rollers. I've done 2 MOT's at different centres (both of which had just been refurbished) and on both occassions the car was put on the rollers after I asked if it was safe for my diff. I feel a big argument coming on next time. Is there anywhere one can get the standard operating limitations/requirements for these tests wrt 4 wheel drive? It would be useful in the case of damage and for the know all at the centres over here who have us over a barrel if you want a current cert (ie." u're not putting my car on only 2 rollers! " "ok mate no MOT")
