Setting sun at Lochranza ..... the butchers (both of 'em) at Pateley Bridge ..... The Crown at Ramsgill ..... a tour round the Theakston brewery in Masham ... walking in the woods and hills near Rothbury. Head North, young man, head North.

Or you could visit London and do the whole touristy thing. Frankly I'd rather swallow catsick, but that's just me.

Well, on a summers day the Smarden Bell in Smarden is great, there is an airfield nearby (headcorn?) so you can watch the planes too.

Camber Sands, lovely beach, hounds love it, especially manic grey ones.

Ashdown Forrest, great for walking, plus of course you have Pooh Bridge, and that is always worth a walk to.

Further north, well, there is a smashing pub near/under Forth Road/Rail bridges in the 'burg, can't remember what it's called, but had a lovely lunch in there.

The Hawse hotel in South Queensferry ? Almost underneath the Forth (rail) Bridge.

Is that the one north of Reigate (is it called Leith Hill?), or is it the other one which is the highest point in south-east England?

Our house in Reigate looked out over the former, I loved it. Mad sledging too...

I lived in Reigate up until last year and am now living down the road. The hill north of Reigate is called Reigate Hill, funnily enough and the Leith Hill I'm referring to is indeed the highest point in South East England...

Yes indeed, some good scram there - Scottish Highlands fullstop is a lovely place, but my favourite would be where I'm from - Cornwall, specifically the quieter parts of the North coast.

I was disappointed with pooh bridge, too many pooh sticks blocking the river

Cool

Lynmouth in Devon. Shame you're here in the summer though - it's blissful in the winter.

For anyone who gets fed up and stressed out in the run up to christmas I would strongly recommend a couple of nights in the Rising Sun hotel right on the harbour. Around £70pppn Dinner Bed and Breakfast - and when I say dinner - DAMN!! If there is finer food to be had in these fair isles then I demand you take me there and feed it to me RIGHT NOW!!!

There are dozens of wonderful walks around there - not to mention the scrumpy, the cream, the scones.....

Fair enough if you want 2nd rate scrumpy. 2nd rate cream and scones pronounced wrongly

My advice would be to keep on going down to Cornwall

Question

Another vote for Derbyshire, and Ladybower, although I thought Derwent dam was the one they practised on? it's attached to Ladybower, isn't it?

How about Malham cove..............a natural limestone cove about 150 feet high, with the infant river Aire bubbling out of it's base.?

Thumbs up The Yorkshire Dales

Was going to say Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales but alcazar beat me to it

Malham Cove

All of the Yorkshire Dales are beautiful, Swaledale is stunning, the drive over the Buttertubs Pass into Swaledale from Wensleydale is good. Kettlewell is lovely and if you drive back down to Skipton be sure to stop off at the sweet shop in Grassington and buy an ice cream *slurp*

Coverdale is lovely too and a little bit off the beaten track

In fact I love the Dales so much I moved here

itinerary we followed a few years back;

Isle of Wight - Osbourne House
Dorset - Hardy country
Devon
Somerset
Bath
Welsh Marches - Ludlow
Chester - cathedral walls and rows.
Lake District - Beatrix Potter country
Hadrian's Wall across to Newcastle (Metroland)
Durham Cathedral
York - shambles, Yorkshire Moors
Derbyshire -Chatsworth House
London - bus tour / theatre

- if more time would have headed up to Scotland, ferry to N. Ireland and back to N. Wales (Snowdonia, Llangollen) via Eire.

- and also the Cotswolds - Chipping Campden, Broadway,

A few people have mentioned the Shambles and York Minster area.

I'll second that and recommend trying a short break in December towards Christmas, the local traders certainly put a lot off effort into it.
I'll be going again this year.

Cheers

Like one guy said if your in Cumbria, you can easily spend a couple of weeks there, fabulous walking and unrivalled scenery. Roads? Do the Wyronse and Hardnot (not too sure of the spelling) passes, both not far from Windemere, some great Hotels and superb food stops.

I'll have to go with Great Langdale in the Lakes, very secluded and out of the way, but with an awesome pub to accommodate for the national trust campsite, often full of nice ladies...mmm... had some quality weekends up there.

Last time I stayed at the NT Great Langdale camp site, we came back (somewhat pissed) from The Drunken Duck to find the river and camp site were one and all

The Lake district is a must i particularly like "Hard Knott Pass" which is a road out of a vally over the hills into the next valley with great views. The UK has so much to offer.

Derbyshire is nice and Wales But the Lake District is the best IMHO for hills. Devon is very nice as well had some good holidays up near Okehampton.

Loads of great recommendations. Didn't realise I'd seen so much of Britain, and most of the bits I've been seem to be regarded as the best.

My two penneth....

As you're probably going to Cornwall, don't bother with £28 fish & chips at Rick Steins. Go instead to The Slipway in Port Isaac for fresh locally caught haddock in beer batter with homemade tartar sauce with a pint of Guiness. Eden is well worth a visit and on the way there or back call in at Clovelly in north Devon where time has stood still for hundreds of years. Rent bikes and cycle the Tarka Trail from Bideford, go to St.Michaels Mount, forget Lands End.
Agree with all that's been said about the Lakes and Wales, particularly Snowdon (climb it and get the train down, do NOT do it the other way), and Port Merrion (if you ever saw The Prisoner). Ladybower/Derwent Dam is a good walk and if you're in the Dales you must eat at the Devonshire in Grassington, the Red Lion in Burnsall (park at Red Lion and walk the riverside trail to Grassington past Lynton falls) and Tenants in Kilnsey.

Have a good trip.
