Of course you can never be sure with normal parenthood either (and I suspect there is an element of selfishness with ALL parenthood) but at least they can say with certainty that the fundemental elements are in place (i.e. a mother and a father) as our species has evolved to have and that their child should have the best chance of success as a result by definition!

No doubt discussing asylum or religion would make him racsist also? It's just a text book politically correct response.

Sorry, but i STILL don't see how this is different from a man/woman relationship, where, for instance, the man knows the woman is infertile when he marries her.

Should THEY be denied the right to foster children too??

Help me out here - spell it out to me, UB.

Tel,
So we'll include infertile (and all the other reasons people can't have kids) couples in this too shall we?
of course! to think anything else is discrimination.

sorry, Im talking about IVF here, not adoption.

Discussion. Debate.

My intention was not incitement. Though it was (with some people) inevitable.

Discussing is one thing - having an opinion is something different. All I'm asking him to do is explain his reasoning behind his opinion - maybe I can learn something. Simple question, but no answer yet.

Lynne - IMO a topical and interesting thread, certainly beats working this morning. As long as the thread doesn't degenerate into a slanging match, where's the problem?

I'm reading that as anti-gay (at least to *some* extent), despite the protestations, sorry.

There actually appears to be nothing in your opinion full stop. How is it possible to hold an opinion and yet not be able to explain the reason why you hold it...?

You're right - you don't need my approval. But to hold a sensible debate/ discussion people need to understand each others reasons. If someone states an opinion then runs away without any ability to justify it, where's the debate/ discussion? "This is my opinion and I'm right." So how can anyone else learn anything form that?

Maybe you're right? How can anyone ever know that if you can't explain why you believe something? You're unwillingness to try to explain your reasons just makes me think you haven't thought it through - just spouted the popular line. Maybe you're better than that, maybe you're not - who knows?

Speaking for myself, I have stated my opinion and backed it up with reasoning. I agree that if you are going to counter someone elses opinion you must either explain yourself aswell or keep schtum in the first place!

The time taken to constantly monitor potentially volatile threads like this, to see that they don't degenerate into a slanging match.

It's threads like these that keep it interesting. Imagine pages of threads where everyone agreed and indulged in inter-user congratulatory smarminess.... it would be hideous!
