I thought the bugeye was about 15.5-15.7 to 100mph so surely it is still quicker as well?

15.5secs....are you taking funny pills?

"Performance Car (sadly no longer with us), as part of their 0-60 challenge timed the Impreza at a mind blowing 5.03 seconds for the 0-60 sprint, with the 1/4 mile being covered in 13.72 seconds at 100.6 mph" REF www.sidc.co.uk

So thats around 13.7secs 0-100mph on a pre 97 uk turbo.

And thats the slowest classic too!

Isn't this the second time we've had those SIDC/magazine figures up on this thread?

I think the fact we are all forgetting is that the slightly modded Clio stuffed 2 Imprezas fair and square and provided video evidence as well.

Why do people keep insisting then that a classic takes 15.5-17.5+secs 0-100mph?

Merely addressing inaccurate statements.

If you'd have read the article, you'd know that there was barely enough fuel for 2 runs and it was on a drag strip, so traction was not an issue. No other road test has got close to those figures.

If this post changes to what's more fun, then IMO a Scoob starts getting very distant. Scoobs "are" capable, but are not fun unless you are going silly speeds. It does too much for you - my 1.9 205 was much more fun, so was the E30 M3. Weren't as quick but were more fun.

I think what's ultimately happened to Scoobs from the 01 onwards, is that Subaru have changed the intended market. They designed the bugeye and current WRX for american (ie fat) tastes - So they're more comfy, quieter, heavier. This then appeals to the older driver - someone who thinks he wants an Impreza but really wants a fastish saloon car as the classic was too much. It's basically become like the Golf GTi. The original was iconic, the MK2 was good, the later ones were generally marketing exercises to capitalise on the "me too" purchaser. Pretty much exactly what an Impreza has become.

Quoting IM/Subarus official figures? The figures you quote are just as bad IMHO on the optimistic side, just as the IM/Subaru figures are on the conservative side.

What't the betting the Performance car figures were done in optimal conditions (ie not much fuel, drag strip, demon driver with no mech sympathy etc).

My feeling is the truth lies somewhere between the two.

Hard hitting assessment Craig H but I feel there is a grain of truth in it, even the new blobeye is a bit, well, a bit lardy

18 seconds!!!! Don't the new BMW 3 series 204bhp 3ltr diesels make a similar time- BEFORE THEY ARE CHIPPED.
Shocking time.

Yeah - 17secs 0-100. Same 60-100 time as an 03/04 wrx. And 155 ltd top speed. And 40mpg. And nice build. And low depreciation.

Common as muck though

If I had the money to waste on a diesel 3 series that did 17secs even before I went and got it chipped then I would for sure- in touring form.
Imagine it, keep the standard wheels, get a 316i badge for the back, a remap and then sit back and enjoy the bewildered looks of drivers of "faster" cars as you gave them a wake up call. Top fun.

Lightbulb

Especially with the baby seats in the back, dog guard, caravan club stickers and a prominent old style RAC badge and me wearing a flat cap for good measure

I thought we were talking about 1/4mile timings cliovsscoob@drag strip etc???

When I goto the dragstrip I have "not much fuel, ....with no mech sympathy"

And you dont need to be a demon driver.

Fact is at the drag strip a bog std UK classic CAN run in the region of 13.72secs.

LOL - is that a rough time?

Those times for performance car indicated the gradient was slightly downhill and it had a tail wind. I have the article.

If this was such a representative time, why do so many WRX STis struggle to even break 14 secs? Is it just that most Impreza owners can't drive? (it is a reasonable assumption as the car does most of it for them anyway)

No idea why some drivers dont manage to get anywhere near the cars capabilities. When I was at Santa Pod and just did a crap launch and time of 13.6secs I had a guy in a lightly modded classic STi ask me how I got such a good time

Then ran against a Cantulnya (induction/exhaust/paddle clutch)and we both launched reasonably hitting 13.44 and 13.43

And yet higher power cars were struggling big time....mind you was very slippery that day.

To do a (half) serious answer:

The MY99 (218 PS) was tested by a pretty serious Belgian mag at 14.4 secs for the 400 meters. The MY02 STi (265 PS) was tested... at exactly the same time. Not on a drag strip, but on dry good quality tarmac.

This is without killing the clutch/gearbox etc, I'm sure you can shave a few hundreds off but you won't do it for a long time. The testers are all ex pro racers who turned journo, not the other way round...

I trust that mag about 100 times more than Evo and the likes.

The Clio maybe fun but the Scoob is by far the better car IMHO

I had one try to have a go in Nottingham and my WRX made it look silly to the point he was glad there was traffic so he could catch up LOL

He followed me into a Shell garage and was only too pleased to tell me of the mods he'd done and my car still spanked him badly.

I watched both vids and the Scoob drivers got it wrong and the Clio guy got lucky thats it full stop.

I shan't be losing sleep over a Clio Cup (mods or not) thats for sure

maybe davyboy and craigh should get a room. somewhere where they can carry out their love of subaru bashing in private.

i am not stupid enough to think that my subaru is the fastest thing on th road - far from it. i have stated on this bbs that 30mph+ and the subaru will have a hard time with any of the 170+bhp hot hatches.

but for you two guys to continually slate the subaru on a large amount of threads at anyone time becomes boring and predictable to say the least.

Hasn't davyboy said he thought the classic was a good car and that he has no experience of the blobeye. He has a downer on the bugeye but from what I understand he is an ex-owner and presumably qualified to comment?
Hardly Subaru bashing.

Nobody does. What does bother (a bit) is that a guy in a cup beat 2 Imprezas fair & square, has a vid to prove it, and then a 450 post discussion emerges, including using the word "gay" for the Clio.

That tarnishes the "Scooby" badge a lot more than you would think.

Agreed the people who've had a hard time accepting the video evidence do look pretty stupid.
