It doesn't mention anything about waving as you do this though.

lol. Good point. I only do this waving malarky when I'm literally going past masses of cars, all oblivious to a lovely, clean, clear stretch of red carpetted inside lane.

The waving may come in the second testament of the Highway code.

Rule 242. I rest my case.......

"Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake".
Does this rule apply to continental driving too?

Yep, just swap left for right however the beauty of the continent is they do move back in after overtaking on the whole.

They leave their indicator on whilst overtaking - it seems to remind them to pull back in once complete.

We were once driving in the left hand lane on a practically deserted motorway, and we catch up this guy doing about 60mph in the fast lane!!

We hang back for a bit, flash him etc and he doesn't budge. We undertook him, waving at him to move across, but nothing. He just sits there in the fast lane, totally oblivious of anyone else..

You didn't undertake. All you did is just drive. If he wants to sit out there like a ****** then so be it.

Westy, all middle lane drivers should be shot at dawn, but I fear we may be accused of mass genocide.....

I blame lorries myself, but there you go. Ban them on the motorway between 7-9.30am, 4-6.30pm and see what a difference it makes. I think they do something similar in Germany.

I agree with your point absolutely Senior AP, and yes it is really irritating to have to move across three lanes to overtake the centre lane "hogger".

Of course he is mindlessly droning along but nevertheless, if you are tempted to overtake on his left and he moves across you to his left and hits you, well you have not got a leg to stand on. Is it worth that risk?, you certainly can't read his mind before you overtake him.

You are quite right, there was a load of publicity to try to persuade people to use the left lane unless they have to overtake. Has not helped in modern times though, perhaps they should publicise it again. Even worse is the prat who believes he has a God given right to remain in the outside lane because his speedo says he is doing 70 mph. Seems to be a few more of those about these days too.

In the States they expect you to overtake on either side on their divided highways, they will even use their indicators to tell you to overtake on the side that they are indicating towards! Too difficult to use the steering wheel to change lanes. Its a bit confusing I can assure you.

Talking Lanes

Takes me back to the days when I had to use the M25 each day to get to the kids school in Berkhamsted. Junc 18 - Junc 20...... always stayed in the inside lane, there's an incline there and without fail, I'd be there at my exit before the bods in the other two lanes. .........

Along with the incorrect use of fog lights (front and rear) hogging a lane on the Motorways is most peoples pet hate. Perhaps some stem from the incorrect terminology like "slow lane" and "fast lane". There arent such things, there are two overtaking lanes. But I dont think its lorries, I know they get really wound up by this too. In effect if some one sits in the middle lane you have just reduced a three lane motorway down to a two lane motorway. Its craas and inconsiderate.
But have you had those that move over when you flash them only to move straight back after you pass them?
Should get six pages easy......

Its down to lack of education I think now...

Speaking to my girlfriendon the way home form MK. I posed the question "why did I move back into lane 1 when lane 2 and 3 are preety much clear"??

She said "I don't know".

More ads on TV (like the old days) and signs on motorways....."don't drive tired". Should be replaced with "remember to stay left".

Phoney Tony would have a lot less headache with congestion. Why, why oh why do they not knbow this. Surely we are not the only people to notice the atrocious lane discipline of so many people.

Cool

LOL there was a thread a while back that mentioned legally 'circling' the middle lane hogger, and seeing how many times you can do it before either they get the hint or traffic stops play.

Circling as in overtake in lane 3, move to lane 1, reduce speed so that the hogger overtakes, then back into lane 3 and repeat

Vast majority of numpties in England would probably not even notice you doing it. Thats the problem. Clueless halfwits.

The reason they don't educate is to make everyone totally pi55ed off with driving on the motorway that they won't? Or to make congestion look worse than it is to make everyone be in favour of whatever hair-brained scheme they want to come up with next????

IMHO

I drove from Northampton to Hemel yesterday evening and I've got to say I did it in pretty good time. Still get **** in the outside lane all the way, but I stayed to 70 and was pure in the knowledge than I wouldn't be nicked.

On the way home, a police car got onto the motorway after me and I was begging them to pull me over for sitting in the inside lane at a steady 70mph.......

That's because you can overtake on the inside in a traffic queue - hence the M25 is pretty much immune....
