If that's what the OFT are saying then I would of though it was cast in stone that the law as they (OFT) tell it is correct. So IM are well within their rights to refuse warranty claims on pre 1st May 2004 cars that have been serviced outside the dealer network.

I am not saying it is right what IM are doing, it would do them a lot of good IMO to show a bit of sense with the pre 1st May cars, but it is their business and they run it how they like within the law.

They really know how to make you consider another marque don't they ?
Exactly m8...

Thats exactly wot i'm thinking! just waiting for confirmation... to see if Subaru will try to wring every last penny from us.. and if so they can stick it!

With the excess they will charge me over the next three services, if this one is anything to go by, then i could buy a warranty...

just phoned for a quote on my service and was told £465. ARE THEY BEING SERIOUS!!??!! was told it was a big one, this meaning the four year service. questioned the fact that being as i dont drive the car that much (very regretably), the car is low on milage 27000 and not the 60000 as stated in the book, surely the full service would not be necessary. Reply was, being as i extended the warranty, if i chose not to follow the service guidelines would invalidate the warranty.

Have you rung warranty people to check if the full major service needs to be done at 27,000 miles to maintain their warranty? Surely some common sense should prevail?Think their number is 0208 603 9921.

I did post a thread relating to this issue...

the result was...
I called IM and spoke at length to the manager, he confirmed you can have your car serviced at a alternative service agent, also that if like me your car is pre 1ST MAY I.E. mines June 03, then they will still be ok with the warranty... SO LONG AS:
  1. You do your upmost to ensure the service is done inaccordance with the service intervals.
  2. Is carried out using genuine Subaru parts
  3. Or parts that are superior in quality such as oil...
  4. that you have done your upmost to insure that it has been carried out with due diligence (this won't be a problem if done at a reputable garage or as what most owners will do a Subaru specialst such as, the Scooby Clinic, TSL, PE, RCM, and a few others considered by must to be very good!
  5. You keep all the receipts for the service and or any items you have used... this is very important...
I've done exactly that... and wouldn't hesitate in recormending doing the same... I took it to the clinic and they did a top job, i provided the Silcolene Pro S Oil, (dealers look at you with derision if you do that) they did the 30k service... It actualy took longer than the dealers would have taken but they went through the car top to bottom; I was well impressed on their knowledge and the the care the guy took in serviceing it...

I personaly think the whole issue around dealer service and 3rd party service agents like specialists will become irrelevant... as always the EU and uk fall behind the states, were its normal practice... As is common in the UK we simply like to get ripped off! We have this false belief that the dealer does a much better job that anyone ellse, and that fact that paying a mechanic upto £170+ per hour in some cases reported by the BBC is ok!

In reality they do no better a job than a specialist and charge whatever they want, this is simply a factor of having a captive audiance for years! This very fact is WHY the OFT and the EU stepped in to combat unfair trading.
Even with the so called 1/2 price items in the service the 30k service was over £420
  1. Oil £40
  2. oil filter £6
  3. Coolant £5
  4. Fuel Filter £15
  5. Air filter £40
  6. Plugs £50
  7. Gearbox and Diff oil £40
And Thats at the price you'd pay as a punter for individual Items... the dealer obviously will have the items at less 40%

As it was scooby clinic charged £200 for the service and I provided the Oil...
And all the parts were Genuine Subaru..
