A hot toddy is generally given before bedtime to help someone to get to sleep, and to decongest for that period.
Too much alcohol will only dehydrate you further during the night, and not help but hinder...

If you're at home then alternate between a good single malt whiskey and Beechams . The last time I did this it induced a fever for 3-4 hours and then I felt so much better. I basically sweated it out. Oh, keep drinking water though.
