And therefore the performance / handling argument is irrelevant.
What they see is more metal, space, presence, chunky "go anywhere" looks for a trade off in fuel economy and price.
Looking at it that way, its not hard to understand why.

BMW X5: 121ft
BMW 530i (new): 120ft
BMW 330i: 125ft
Honda CTR: 125ft
Audi A4: 125ft
Jaguar X-type: 130ft
Jaguar S-type: 125ft
Mercedes C320 (new): 136ft
Mini Cooper S: 115ft
Subaru WRX Sportswagon: 130ft
Subaru Impreza Sti: 114ft
So the X5 stops from 60-0 only 7ft longer than an STi. Same as the new 5 series (saloon), Quicker than an A4, 3-series and way quicker than a Merc estate.

I once saw a driver in an X5 try & drive up a grass bank with a small incline. I could have gotten up it in a RWD BMW with slicks on. He bottled it & backed off. Everybody watching pi$$ed themselves

Most of the grip will come from having the correct tyres. Whenever Topgear etc review the X5 it has road tyres. Most non-Clarkson journalists do point out this makes a massive difference to off road performance.

Select Low Ratio, Diff Lock on, suspension raised to max setting and off I go taking the kid to school in the 4.6 Range Rover. Lovely! King of the road me LOL!
It's a fab practical car which is fab to drive - the car works and looks a treat; car enthusiasts really should get that!
It even keeps my speed down; rarely go faster than 70 in it. This safer ambling progress is of course ideal with a baby in the back and a large dog in the boot and the half a ton of accessories needed to sustain both for a day. I also promise you that the baby is more likely to survive in a head on with any Scoob - the bonnet alone weighs more than a Scoob giving the selfish mass/inertia advantage against a car, and maybe a bit more leeway against larger vehicles. Baby Bonus...
Because I drive it much slower than the Scoob I get more mpg than the Scoob! Ohh and the RR has Cat's so by driving it instead of the STi I actually make a positive environmental contribution
My car; my choice; my wallet! It SO does the job.

3 words ...Urban **** Tanks
Americanised nonsense vehicles for people with big egos. Make about as much sense on UK roads as the HMS Invincible..which, incidentally, is what the drivers of said vehicles seem to think they are. IMHO of course

I'm surprised some of these Subaru owners have the time to reply. I'd of thought they'd of been too busy rallying their cars 24/7.
Don't try and tell me some of them buy them for normal road use?!!

Most 'Off' (ha ha) roaders are pretty crap off road that why people who NEED to go off road never buy them (farmers etc. all have landies, izusu's etc.) in the same way that the Scoob is NOT a rally car, it (along with most cars) would fall apart if you tried to do a rally stage in one. It LOOKS a bit like a rally car and has 4wd but to seriously rally it, you would have to change it beyond all recognition.
Personally don't like the 'off' (ha ha) roaders as they look ugly and distasteful (much like the scoob then ), but if someone wants one then let them. Just make sure whatever they drive, they drive them properly and considerately.

Sorry, just got back from a gravel stage
I'm glad Diesel has finally told the thread why he REALLY got his 4x4. It's for running moles over! Nice one mate, it beats our old long winded method of standing over a mole hill with a shot gun...
LOL, they were the days.
