'I've still not been told what the cause was but its clear that its RIP for the engine I'll probably go down the engine sourcing route and try for the MKII 3.0 with the 210bhp (15bhp more) as it has more top end and better fuel economy Anyone care to guestimate how much it'll costs to source and engine, buy it and get it fitted?'

SB be careful, might not be a just a case of dropping it in, they changed the electrics on the later 406 so you might find the loom is different and its no mean feat to get it sorted, might have gone to a drive by wire throttle or other nonsense. Not saying its not possible and it may just drop in but do your homework !

Sorry to hear this Saxo Boy. I'd try to get a replacement engine off the same model year cheap or break the car for spares if I were you rather than do anything fancy/fit later version.

I think I've secured a nice example off ebay with 69k miles, fsh, recent cambelt on r plate in china blue with grey leather. Looks in very good condition and I'm assured all the bits and bobs work (inc electrics). The total cost is £2250 which is about the same I paid for the green machine if you consider that it needed a big service as soon as I bought it. I'll switch the alloys and sound system over and then use the old one for spares and I'll ebay bits from it. I'm confident that in time I'll sell enough bits from it to clear £1000 but it'll be a real shame to break what is otherwise a very good condition car That's the problem with these cars being so cheap nowadays - if something goes wrong its just not viable to fix them.

You know there is another lesson in all this!! Just 24 hours before my engine blew up I was slagging off a mate for buying a saxo VTR with 170k on the clock saying something along the lines off, 'its going to blow any minute - get a understressed v6 like me' I'll learn to shut my mouth

SB, sounds like me, was giving one our trainees a lift to look at a car and we were talking about driving in general, rules and regs so I say that there is only one rule to driving, not to hit anything.........

2 minutes later I slid gracefully into the back of a Mondeo that helpfully decided to stop in the middle of the road for no apparent reason.

Saxo is this sorted now?

An engine has just come up for sale on 205gtidrivers.com, as below:

I've got a good V6 24v engine (ex 406) for sale that is already out of the car, has the ECU, autobox (still atached so its included for free), cat, exaust For £500

For an extra £50 you can have the twin output fule pump, the fuel lines, aircon pump and the radiator.

For a Further £20 you can have the PAS pump too!

Cheers for the heads up DW I've got a new 406 V6 and I am currently thinking of swapping the engine over to the old car as the old cars bodywork is far nicer, etc. Still not sure what to do yet.

Prolly cheaper to respray the new one than pay to have the engine put in the other one with all it's associated costs.
