It's actually based on the Puma chassis. I'm sure I read that Ford thought a Puma convertible would have been 'too predictable' so they did this instead. Sorry, I should have clarified.

Just after the lauch of the KA while I was working at a paint shop that did 3rd party work for a local design house we resprayed a KA that had a 1.6 zetec engine from a Fiesta Si in it and boy was it nippy!!!
So I think that these engine will fit as the only difference was slightly shortened chassis legs basically the same engine mounting points.

The Ka and Puma are all based on the Fiesta chassis (compare the wheelbases), so the engines will be relatively interchangeable. Even if the Zetec doesn't fit exactly, the modifications won't be that great and could be included as part of a mid-life "update".
The Ka was fitted with the old 1.3 Enduro engine (as opposed to the 1.25/1.4/1.7 Zetec) primarily because of its "bargain basement" status in the range and the Enduro is a cheap reliable engine to use.
Ford also didn't want the Ka to have any sporty credentials so they hobbled it so that it wouldn't embarass the hot Fiestas or the (at the time upcoming) Puma. The Fiesta with the Enduro engine takes an extra 1.5 seconds to reach 60 than the Ka. The 1.4 Zetec Fiesta & Puma hit 60 in 11 seconds, so it's reasonable that a 1.4 Zetec Ka could do it in under 10 and that's 2.0 Mondeo territory. A 1.7 Zetec Ka could probably get to 60 in under 8 seconds. God only knows what they could get if they used the new 2.0 Zetec!!
Now that Ka sales are more respectable (and continuing to increase), Ford may well decide to do some variations. My other half currently drives a Ka 3 and she's very interested in getting one!!
