At least the police actually turned up,my mate had to wait a week when someone poured paint stripper and gloss over his car, even tho it had just happened and the bloke responsible had just drove away,he gave a description of the car and said if you get here quick you might see him leaving....5 days later they turned up and said ooo thats a mess mate,4 month old sti8 down to bare metal

I'd say that looks more like an uzi shot your car mate,i'd be out looking for the little b*st*rds with a big bat with a rusty nail in it ,then just leave the scene cos the police obviously wont look for you

Defo looks like 22 air gun & as stated depending on type of pellets used & the power of the Gun, I know 12lb/ft is the legal limit but most people Tune them for a little more, Scooby panels are quite thin really. Im willing to loan out my 22 for a test , just not willing to loan the scoob

The little b@stards, want the gun cocking without a pellet, The barrel shoving up there *** & discharging, Quick air injection should sort them out

I also think it unlikely that was a firearm to be honest.

I'm certain a .22 rimfire would have gone straight through, they average about 120 ft lb if I remember correctly. The panelling is very thin, it looks like a air rifle hit. It would have been a lot more serious if it had hit glass.

I agree that it is unlikely, though just possible, that it is a .22 rimfire round. Even so it is worth considering the damage:

Poke that panel with something to achieve similar damage, now poke yourself in the eye with the same object and force. That is the damage, assuming you survive, it would have done if it had hit you in the eye. (NO, don't really do it) The fact is that this is a very serious offence involving a weapon which is likely to be repeated by the people involved. I suspect, therefore, that you have a duty to raise the matter, again, with the police and to ensure that it is investigated further.

I don't want to go police slagging as people react to a situation as they find it but it is possible that in this situation, and after reflection, they may consider a more thorough investigation worthwhile and in the public interest. It might be worth putting that to them.

One thing Shrops forgot to mention was that the police also admitted that this particular bridge was renown for stone throwing at moving cars and that they were puzzled by the shooting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's a relief then eh...............?

That is really scary

I had a similar (ish) incident tonight - not someone shooting at the car (thank god), but I came around a blind right hand corner, following another car to be met by lumps of concrete that had been placed in the road!

We weren't going that quick and we all avoided them. I actually stopped (everyone else drove off) and went back, picked them up and threw them in the bushes. This took place under the A414 flyover (Hoddesdon Road) and it's then I noticed two little ******* sitting under the supports of the flyover just watching.....

It really does say something when these kids get their kicks from trying to cause serious accidents

Easily possible to be a .22 air. My Theoben .22 (chronographed at 11.6lb) will put a point/dome head pellet through a 0.5mm steel sheet at 25 yards. I know this as when I first started shooting in the garden using it as a backstop for target/zeroing practice, I was suprised that a few pellets had gone clean through. Sabot steel rounds sail clean through.

The damage looking at those photos looks very similar to the sheet of steel I used, i.e. approx inch and half wide indentation with the rip/puncture in the middle.

Anyway, air or fire arm it is a scary thing to happen. I would certainly pursue it though. It is Bank Holiday weekend, they scum will probably be out all weekend doing the same.

I agree that is an airgun.

Growing up as I kid on a farm I used to use an old aluminum skinned fish and chip van as a target backboard for shooting at with a .22 air gun on the legal power limit- it made very similar indents into the body work as those photographed. (And some pellet types could occasionaly punch through it)

If your driving towards the shot at 70 odd mph your adding another 31m/s to the velocity of that pellet as well.

Do not let the police just file it under a 'minor' incident- if that had hit you in the head/eye or upper torso it could quite easily have killed you, either from the damage or most likely from the ensuing crash.

As had been said if that had been a speed camera van parked up there and been shot at in the same way they and half of the police force in the next two counties would still be out chasing them.
