calm down, calm down :-) ............... i've just paid a deposit to hold the scoob until next weekend when i go to buy it depending on the test drive

next choice was the Astra sri with style pack (skirt kit)

What do we disagree on? That you think Vauxhall make good solid cars or that you're 25 going on 50?

I think this argument needs a line drawing beneath it. Let's move on, find some middle ground and perhaps involve the peacemaking abilities of Kofi Annan.
Alternatively, you could just admit reality - which is that if you enjoy driving then the Focus is the best family hatch you can buy.

Robby, I haven't read anyone else's post here so I don't know where this thread has got to after 3 pages but, from your initial question, I would say definitely go for an Astra. I've driven new Astras and Focus's (as hire cars) and, although the Focus TDCi is pretty nippy once you get used to the initial turbo lag, I'm reckoning that that's the only decent Focus, other than the ST.

I'm in a similar position to you - trying to sell my Impreza for something more sensible and new/reliable/cheap to run as my main car - had a think about every model in that kind of 'medium hatchback' category and the Astra 1.8 SXi was my first choice.
