my mental track day 205

DW I think Davey Boys comment is based on the number of laps i have done.
My first venture there in 300BHP scoob saw me do around 10 laps and be totally chuffed to bits at breaking 10 mins. I honestly thought I was going at warp factor 6 ........120 or so laps later my little 205 laps in 8.55 and the scoob in 8.41 (fastest timed laps).
You have to learn the ring, and you dont start doing that till after 20-30 laps. I still have loads to learn even now .....Dave is a much better 'ring' driver than me

Rb's vid shows him doing a 1.29 lap (his first time on combe) I have laps of my 8 valve doing 1.28 lap, its first time on Combe
Spot the subtle, but oh so important, difference.

I have done 15 mins in the scooby previously if thats what your refering to?
The 1.28 /1.29 lap times were during spring action day in traffic and again on a 15 minute session not an open pit lane track day.
lol ........glad to see i have wound RB up enough to be sat at home with his vid cam out timing laps, how cool is that.
I wouldnt worry about it RB i always get told by the 205 drivers club that im far too aggressive on the track anyway.
Faster lap with ex racing driver at the helm exactly ... I bet your ex racer could beat both you and I in a bogo fiesta

so are your laps with 1 or 2 people on board gutmann ?
Anyway, just been through my laps and 1:28 is my fastest, and believe it or not thats the same time as David DeCosta did it in..read into that what you will. Maybe Gutmann should be driving F1 ?

Well there ya go mate ....... we both managed the same times. You with your ultra set up big £ racer and me in my ickle 1.9 8 valve smoker.
I did two 15 min sessions that day. One on my own and one with a passenger. I have no idea where I did the 1.28 laps to be honest. It was more about finding a lap without a pleb in an RS turbo turning in on me then anything though.
Shall I weigh myself? I know the car weighs 865KG coz ive had it on the weighbridge.
Funniest Mi comment I have heard to date......I cant take it to the Nurburgring untill i have had the sump baffled coz it would suffer oil starvation or somesuch thing ...lol.....flame suit being slipped back over me shoulders again ..

Moose it depends really. The 8 valve unit picks up quickly whereas the 16V needs all the revs to get it going. I havent driven one so i have no idea how I would get on balancing it through corners etc. I have no doubt that 'R' rated tyres would knock more time off a lap then changing to a boggo Mi would though.
Still trying to find the 1.28 lap ...... Think it may have been removed. Back home soon though and will check again and send you the disk RB lol

Having owned both an 8v and 16v I would say the Mi would eat the 8v for breakfast in the same hands, same circuit etc. The lag/pickup isnt really a problem, and certainly nothing I have noticed that much over my old 8v.

Just remember guys it aint all about power, I reckon I could knock 3 seconds off a lap if I ran 'R' rated tyres for instance. You would need a serious power hike to gain 3 seconds.....
Good site and vids though mate, keep up the good work.

Just thought I would remind you of my original post ....... Didnt say an 8V would beat a 16V but said it would give it something to worry about. Also said and still stand by the fact that 'r' rated tyres would make me quicker than just poking an Mi engine in the car

Don't be backing down now....
I agree on some tracks you'd get better times with stickier tyres, but on others you'd be better off getting a 16v to keep up
All i need it better driving skills to remain well ahead, oh and a baffled sump of course!

Like i've said about Mi lumps before, if they are done properly they will last, but if not they wont.
The guy that had mine converted had bought the car, then spent £1200 on the conversion. The scrap yard where he bought the Mi lump dropped it off a wagon and smashed the sump and got dirt and grit into the crankshaft etc. They cleaned it up as best they could, but the guy couldnt spend any more money to get it done right, so just plonked the engine in and sold the car on, so the engine was smoking from day one.
Having removed most of the engine last night it now looks like a broken dizzy cap was the reason for it not running, but the blue smoke was still there so I am continuing with the replaceent anyway.
I'm not doing a fancy rebuild job, just buying another unit and shoving it in, so it may go the same way.

Cheers G, everything's getting there now though. 405 Mi16 is fully road legal and being used now so at least I have daily transport.
I quite enjoyed removing half the engine last night to be honest, pics later.
