nobody who posts on this thread actually go out in there scoobs (no one ever sees anyone anyway ) even though most are probably daily drivers!!

has anyone ever used Railway Motors in WestHoughton? Gonna have a clutch fitted on Tuesday by them, was recommended them by a few garages around Atherton as most places "wont touch" a scoob. One place who shall remain nameless "Atherton Mot Centre" quoted about £700 just in labour as its "an engine out job" (engine is probably secured with about 10 bolts in total, radiator 2 bolts, downpipe maybe 5, few jubilee clips to loosen for the fuel lines then up up and away. Doesnt seem like £700 worth to me, but hey Im no mechanic!!

This Railway Motors prep a ford focus rally car with fully Subaru drivetrain and engine and have changed a clutch on it in 20 mins they are charging £150+vat for the labour to do it which is quite decent I think (assuming hourly rate is £50)

Just hope my uprated clutch kit and lightweight flywheel arrive on monday!!

That sounds alright, let me know how you find them, need a clutch fitting in mine. Don't see why its an engine out job, at least, it isn't on the sport, just take the rad out and shift the engine forward.

I have used them before and had no problems

They also will show you what was up with your other and why it was crap and possibly what caused it

They did when I had my 306 gti6 done there a couple of years back

seem like a friendly / knowledgeable bunch when I have spoken with them on the phone, the labour is less than what API charge (just got my new uprated clutch delivered this morning and lightweight flywheel )

Failed its mot on power steering leak so gonna ask them to sort it out, it is only a pipe leaking going into the steering rack, but the bolt is slightly rounded so I cant get it off without cutting the hydraulic pipe and trying a socket on it, also think the CO2 sensor is goosed as failed on emmisions as well something like 7+% when it should be something like 0.5% - oops that was on a non cat test as well!!

Japanese car made for Japanese tools and mechanics (small)
Access is a major problem on where it is situated. Solution found. Offer up replacement pipe to make sure its the same, then bend pipe to weaken it , then with amount of pipe remaining bend more with needle nose pliers (fiddly due to access) and then finally mr 12mm deep socket and extension and pray. Sorted it yesterday and touch wood no more leak! (now just to change the lambada and do a bit of soldering!!


Railway motors did a great job on the car, fitted in around about 3 hours (well got the call of them about that time after I had dropped the car off), expecting to stall the car when I got it but not stalled it once. Biting point is now in a more usual position, and engine seems to rev slightly quicker as well and no more clutch judder!. Railway motors also pointed out a few little things that need addressing soon (water leak from the header tank - common problem replacement due today ) and a split in a cv boot. Its a shame they dont do "normal" garage work otherwise I think I would get all my jobs done there (ones I dont want to do/try myself)

Talking for a while about their focus rally car with full scoob running gear, finding out how it gets its power (approx 300bhp/300lbft) with it being restricted. They were also impressed with my new brakes

Different note, actually saw Andy10 yesterday in the scoob, yes you heard it here first, in the scoob!! got a mad wave from him as well

I drove my car today and spotted myself in the window of a shop as I drove past At least it looked like my car but it could have been an identical car driving at the same speed as me through the inside of the shops
Nah that would be madness...

Oh and on a serious note, I was followed today by "Gary" in his black WRX hawkeye through Fearnhead in Warrington today... I know him to be "Gary" because according to his tiny reg plate he has chosen to spell his name G4RY...
Now this could be because he is a big G4 fan, and who can blame him, they are incredibly gifted young men, but I cant help thinking that announcing your love of a young Barbers Shop Quartet by mixing it in with your name on your reg plate is just a little bit gay
