It amazes me that people still use bank / building society drafts for these kinds of transactions. If they'd used EFT (electronic funds transfer) via CHAPS (Clearing House Automated Payment System), the money would be in your account in 24 hours. You can phone up your bank to check when the funds are in your account. The charge is about the same as issuing a bankers / building society draft.
I know it doesn't help in this case, but it is worth remembering this for the future.

Surely you can see whether the money is in your account or not?
I must say, if some little pipsqueak had been tear arsing round in my car for free and I may or may not have thousands of pounds in my bank account, and cars that may or may not be registered in my name I don't think I could be quite so blasé about it!

Should be able to just clarify it with the bank it was deposited I would have thought. They should be able to give you a definitive answer as to whether the cheque can be stopped by the individual in this case.
We are desperate for answers!!!

when i looked into stopping a cheque last year (ebay prob!), I was told that a 'Building Society' cheque could only be stopped if the payee (carl is this case) agreed and put it in writing to the bank. It is treated like a bankers draft.......
