The only reason the GTI handles better was because the MKI VTS (which they tested the GTI against) had a different set up to the MKII and youths were renowned for lifting off and putting them backwards through hedges. The MKII is more civilised and has the most entertaining handling of any car I have ever driven

Saxoboy, of those two pics you posted, the GTI does not look like a GTI to me..... it has the right wheels and the arches, but is riding way too high and the rear bumper does not look right. Seems to have a visible exhaust that the GTI does not have.

You gotta compare eggs with eggs!

i'm actually in the process of selling my mk2 (2002 02plate) vts.

it's icelandic grey in colour, done 38k, lowered 55mm at the front, 60 at the back. bilstein suspension all round, and GMC shockers, lexus style 2 clusters (the less common one's - and i think they do suit the car), GMC big brake kit, pugsport rally clutch, and thats about it.

DTM cup mirrors, GMC BTB manifold, decat and freeflow system.

email me on markovts@ntlworld.com for pictures and more details.
looking for 6.4k or very nearest offer.

cheers

marko

Looks like a GTI to me, they sit that high as standard which is why most people lower them and the vts. The exausts sits just under the rear valance and is just visible from some angles.

If this is the pic you mean >>>

Then it is NOT a GTi, it's the 1.4 Sport (like a Quicksilver), only available on mainland Europe and never in the UK.

Another point to note, is look in the back of evo in the car directory and see which one they recommend in the group - thats right, the 106

Plus, if you look at the performance figs, they tested the 106 to be the faster car

Scoobyjawa, go buy every publication and for each car add the 0-60 times of the vts together and then the same for the GTI. Then divide the numbers by the number of publications. Now which one is 'booked' as faster

BTW, if you can notice a difference on the road between the cars be it round the corners or in a straight line then you have some attention to detail!

Well, had to comment in this thread really after owning a saxo and having lots of mates/colleagues who have owned both.

Basically the same car. To the average driver the cars will be identical in performance and handling. The 106 GTI has leather and because of the relative scarcity of them in comparison they tend to be about £1-1.5k more than a similar age/condition VTS. Whether leather seats and admittedly slightly more up-market image is worth this is obviously entirely up to your own perceptions of the cars. The insurance will be almost identical i imagine.

Personally? I prefer the VTS. As has been said before, looks a little bit meaner (the mk2) and wider and personally i would rather save a bit as well because im not really bothered by a leather interior and i also couldnt give two hoots about the image of the car.

My advice? If you genuinely have no gut feeling then just toss a coin. Either car will be great... But im sure you will have a gut feeling as most people usually do. Go with that..
