ajm, sorry I'm just not convinced by any of the arguments.

Okay, educate me. Is there absolutely no other wildlife that has no predators other than human but numbers have been maintained by shooting rather than killing by 'sport'?

Er no. If the deer are on your land you can shoot it. No questions asked. If you are on somebody elses property then maybe.

Permits with numbers may be issued by the landowners such as the national trust or deer stalking syndicates for their own land but this isn't a requirement by law.

Is a police man on horse back going to be with them to make sure they don't go after a fox ?
Just imaging how many permits the PIG will have to have to go across all the farmers fields. It will be hilarious !!!!
Come the 'Third Term' this will not be a problem. It will compulsory that all horses will have GPS units inserted under their skins (just like all cars) thus enabling monitoring of all movements easily loggable and traceable.

Its called "Boom and Bust" mathematics. Species not controlled by predation will continue to multiply until such a time prey cannot sustain predator. Predator starves, prey booms etc.

We accept that if we weren't fox predators we would get boom and bust. Hunting is just a part of fox predation that happens to keep people in jobs, people find fun (even though you don't) and also incentivises people not to slaughter them completely. It works, it always has worked - in short if it aint broke, don't fix it.

Your perception is that is is wrong. Wrong by human artificial morals? Maybe. Wrong in terms of maintaining a natural balance? No.

Perhaps I just dont give your 'discussions' these days any real merit, it seems so self centered tbo. But I guess many animals such as foxes animals don't deserve rights, it would limit our ability to exploit them eh...

The world is not a machine ajm, designed to produce and sustain only human life, not only have humans become disassociated with nature, but now we dont want certain animals to be part of nature either. Why dont you work out why I resort to 'wise cracks m8

I gets me. Why the good old badger isn't taken off the protected list because it would save the government so much money. The badger is one of the biggest spreaders of T.B in the country. Just wait until the problem gets so big that they will be going into towns just like the old fox !!

Anyhow, on the subject of badgers and foxes, foxes will sometimes co-habit or shelter in badger setts, and once dogs are sent into a badger sett in order to bolt any foxes that might be present, it is impossible to control what they do or where they go, and if badgers are present the dogs are just as likely to attack them as they are any fox that is present. Yet another 'man made' self control method.

You have completely misinterpreted what I am about. Here I am arguing for methods of control that will SUSTAIN species levels and you have me down as some genocidal maniac.

Have all our discussions about the impact of non-indigenous predators on species populations fallen on deaf ears? You have ignored the fact that all through these threads my arguments consistently centre around SUSTAINING natural levels of wildlife.

And as you berate me you do so knowing British wildife is suffering as a direct consequence of your choice of pet. Selfish? Yes I guess we all are.

If your numbers are accurate then it is still a significant amount that will change overnight.

If you really believe the numbers killed by fox hunting are so insignificant how can you justify destroying a British institution?

And while we are on the subject, I don't see it as barbaric, I see it as one animal killing another as quickly as it can. It doesn't pull my heart strings any more than watching a lion smother a zebra. The only thing that galls you about it is that there are people there enjoying the hunt, and because you personally cannot identify with them you would seek to deprive them of that.
