Average UK salary is either £22000 or £25000 pa IIRC
and when I earned less than £35k, I could certainly manage with owning my flat and not having any debts!

I just go by the rule of 'If you can't afford to clear the credit card off in full each month then you don't buy the goods in question!'

My job isn't quite the breeze people think it is(assumption is you sit on your a**e all day and drive about) as many of varying levels of intelligence have found out and not lasted a fortnight.Pay is performance related,if you're good at it you earn more.

We are talking 'White Van Man' here are we??
I agree you don't just sit on your 4rse and drive about ..........
You hurl abuse at the other road users
You drive like a complete and utter moron
You get to have your mobile stuck to your ear whilst driving
You speed on residential streets
You read the Sun and whistle at every piece of skirt you see
Must be tough - am I missing any other aspect of a van drivers job??

You hurl abuse at the other road users[b]-only those who cut me up(no abs),cut blind corners on junctions or do 40mph in a NSL etc.
You drive like a complete and utter moron-nope 8 hours on the road(in residential areas) driving like a moron would soon see me with a ban and a smashed up van and no job-have a clean licence and only dents have happened when I've been off on holiday/other duties.
You get to have your mobile stuck to your ear whilst driving-rarely take it to work, hate seeing people using them while driving
You speed on residential streets-defintiely not, stop too frequently and inadequate brakes and am very aware of the possibility of kids/dogs running out(often on purpose as it's fun, apparently.
You read the Sun and whistle at every piece of skirt you see-don't read any tabloids,I've neither the time nor the inclination.
Must be tough - am I missing any other aspect of a van drivers job??-yes lots, but I won't bore you.

Live off the tips, and you make quite a lot. I bought my scooby when I worked there
Problem is, you can't really work every night, as the shifts were 5 till 3 in the morning, and you get so knackered you can't drive properly after a few days. Did a whole week & a half once

My mate is a white van man... he has to lease the van out of his wages and pay the fuel, he gets paid so much a parcel.
There is a lot of warehouse work around here all at about £6 an hour,
but you give up your weekends and bank holidays for that... crappy !!
I have to work overtime every week, I normally go for about 8 hours on top but last week did 20 hours, if I want to trade the scooby up next year it's going to be quite a few 60 hours weeks to pay for it !!
You guys on £25,000 - £40,000 a year are lucky... all I can say is don't loose sight on how much money that actually is these days !! you may think not much but it would be a lottery win for many.

May be ok for you earning 40odd quid an hour, but you're older than me. That's what I'm looking for at the moment....
Anyway, I've nothing to spend it on at the moment, apart from windsurfing and a car (which I've not bought yet)

I wish sparks earnt £80K a year i would be rich. top rate on the national grade (http://www.jib.org.uk/jib395.htm) for working in central london with a company van for a sparks after 3 year apprentiship then two years on your own experence and NVQ3 and then getting grade approved by independent body (JIB) is £11.53 an hour. travel to and from work in your own time and buy your own hand tools costing £500-2000 to start with and probably £200-400 a year depending how careful you are.
can be a good job if you like lots of weekend working and long days but for a flat 38Hr week its £22,783. that is working in central london.
