I didnt go to UNI, just worked my *** off for 5 years making shrewd job moves, getting what I needed to out of each position, training, experience more money, each move you get a few k more.

Made some classic moves to get more money, Started at one company the first month i get a 10k pay rise as I threatened to leave and as they had spent 4 months finding me and had to outbid over comapnies to get me they didnt want me to leave. Same year an 8K bonus So i would stay and finish a project. The amount of money you can earn in central london is unbelivable. But the commute and the hours were destroying my life so I quit, took a pay cut and now work from home and travel to a few places now and then.

Money isnt everything, As long as you are happy.

well it looks like im in a dead end job then reading some of these posts.
My manager left to become a teacher and they replaced my manager with a director thats used to be a salesman
Another chap started the same time as me but he earns more than me cuz his age and experience. If they was gonna give anybody a promotion it might be him and not a 24 year old designer.

Does anybody else have a salsman as a manager? Fancy making a salesman incharge of a design department.

not really underpaid, you'd be surprised..

I got a first in mech design 4 years ago and i'm only earning 20k now.. Mind you I do about 15 hrs work in a 37hr week doing CAD 2d - 3d translations and running a selective laser sintering machine..

I guess I could earn a packet working for a car manufacturer or similar but I chose to work for a university and to be fair the money is p!ss poor doing that unless you're on the academic staff..

Pah.. See my thread in on CAD Engineers btw, if anyone here is a self employed designer.

Personally, I don't buy the theory that being well off doesn't matter. I remember what it was like to do hard manual labour, 11 hour days etc for £11k p.a. It was fookin sh*te. I'm quite pleased that I earn more money now. If I have a choice, I will carry on earning more money. Maybe at some stage I will pack it in a move to the country or something, but hopefully I will be financially secure at that time.

Maybe I'm just shallow and materialistic but I don't remember what a great laugh it was to have to eat plain pasta cos you have no money, not be able to go to the pub cos you have no money, not be able to afford a car etc etc.

Indeed!

Money IS important!

I remember not having any money for coal, hairdryer in the bed to keep warm!

Cracking the ice that had formed over the loo so I could have a pee!

Carpet tiles from someones big bathroom in the lounge of our unfurnished rented house! They stank of pi55!

A camping cooker on the kitchen work surface as we had no money for a cooker!

A £5 hoover that I had to fix!

A £2 black & White TV that I had to fix!

We were happy ....... but its so nice now not to worry where the next 10p is coming from!

Most of you kiddies on here just don't know what its really like being on the poverty line - I most certainly DO!

Hence, it takes me an age to let a £ out of my clutches!

so cmon pete- would be kind enough to enlighten us to your current (and past) profession?
getting the hint its something in defence/military...
---
im on ok money, but I work stupid hours and the 'burn out risk' is very very high.. around 5% of people in my type of job are over 35... (higher percentage for 'management' positions)
although a whacking great bonus every two years approx (royalties- so based on units sold which means we have to work our asses off to make a good enough game to GET royalites..) kind of softens the blow.
currently lucky and working in the same company for over 5 years now.
Been doing my job for over 8 years.. and Im knackered

altho i have a nice modest house, car I love to bits, wifey/ kiddy and no debt that I cant handle (anymore).
im 27.
I get bored at work and would love a change but its all I can do I expect for the money.. would love to take a risk and work with cars.. but too much risk involved (ie: i need some serious training- but also a decent wage to run my commitments (single income).
one day.
'baldy motorsports' here I come (when im 50 and half dead thru stress!)

Not actually sure what I earn, probably around £75k this year..

What do I do? Reinsurance company corporate insolvency, and sorting out other people's financial cockups, for which I get the last laugh - they make a mess of things, and then I get paid about three times as much as them to sort it out - nobody else wants to do my job cos it's aggro, and they can't do it anyway or they wouldn't have cocked it up in the first place, and I have a job to retirement

hmmmmmm.
my basic wage is ok.. with my other 'earnings' (property rent etc) i'm earning good money... i'd say.
But I still live at home.. will be out next year tho. All i say is i'm a lot better off since the Scoob went and i'm running a Smart car... over the last 6 months i've saved a load. No HP on a car (the MY03 i was looking at was gonna cost me £330 a month for 3yrs!!! ) Petrol costs/Insurance/services charges etc etc. But now i have cash in my pocket to spend on more important things at the mo.
I makes you think how ppl on lower wages running scoobs do it on a shoe string!!

Im in the IT field unfortunately - first job after finishing uni last year, and Im on about £22-23k + company van (dont like having a van, but free fuel and no car related costs is allowing me to save a fair bit)

You guys with houses, pensions, nice cars dont know how easy youve got it - no way I can afford a house (even if prices fall 30% it would still be a stretch) - dont have a pension either (hardly any jobs offering decent pensions these days).

I work in a Flour mill (I heat treat the flour).
Im on 20k aprox/year (gross).
The company are and have sent me away on lots of courses (one in switzerland) so I feel they are a good company to work for.
I have worked for them less than 1 year.

Im also in the TA which I get aprox 2-3k/year.

I have a Home in Hull (cheap housing) with missus and daughter.
We seem to get by ok.

Thinking of moving nearer work as I spend 122GBP/month on fuel alone in my little (just for work) 205 TD. That is not including servicing tax and insurance.
I feel That I could be putting this cash towards a mortgage but I can not justify the price of houses near where I work.
stuck between a rock and a hard place!!!

You are of course right, and equally you know the answer to that one. However, if you start going down the "what if" road you can pull yourself apart, and will never move forwards

Carolyn was a huge influence on my life for ten years, and I still miss her terribly (it was a year last Wednesday since she died, in some ways it seems like yesterday and in others like years ago), but you have to go on or you stay stuck in the past, and I know she did not want that, as she told me so shortly before the end

I've been going out with someone else for some months now (by coincidence her husband died from cancer three years ago, so we both know exactly where the other is coming from), and despite the fact that Carolyn said I should not be on my own, I should meet someone else, it doesn't stop me from feeling guilty about it

I'm now starting to balance out and remember the good part of the ten years with Carolyn (most of it ) rather than the last terrible couple of weeks that stick in your mind more than anything.

Lesley my new girlfriend isn't into cars at all, a no nonsense Bolton girl, and i've already had to replace part of the R32 exhaust with a quieter bit. Just as stroppy as Carolyn in her way, and neither of them the worse for that

Left the Army after 5 years, earning around 19k...

I was a Comms Technician - thats pretty much the best pay band!
I left a year ago, and now work in IT support, as a civvie for the Police.

Hopefullly I made a good decision by leaving the forces.
I'm on more money now (21.5k), but I've just bought a place in N. London, so I have nothing at all left over - Life's a b!tch!

There's a few high earners on here ain't there?? Is it 40% tax after £31500??

So if your earning £75000, £43500 of that will be at a tax rate of 40%.

Im fairly lucky, i'm 21 living in Yorkshire and earn just over £30000. Still have debts like everyone else, but i consider £30000 to be a good decent wage.

Whoever said £35000 was the average UK wage needs there head looking at and bringing back down to reality. I know a lot of people making ends meat on only 11-12k a year.

UK average is around £21-22000 a year. That's taking into account all the high london earners. Exclude london and that £21-22000 a year will fall quite a bit.

Come on Pete, you're having us on.

How did you afford the hairdryer in the first place?

And how did you pay for the electricity to run it, or was it pedal powered?

Interesting data, I don't reference it because of the political statements it makes, but the data is interesting.

It is "only" the margin that is taxed at 40%, so the amount above the threshold you get hammered on.
