Geezer,

But if you look at the technology that has gone into the latest Canon CMOS sensors you will see that they have addressed these issues using "microlenses" to straighten the light path before hitting the sensor itself. It does seem to work very well.

But I agree, I don't believe full size 35mm sensors will always be around. But saying that, I want one

Cheers

Ian

Hey Tiggers,

The D2X is a smashing piece of kit. But.

An increasing proportion of my stuff is now for print magazines rather than 'just' online. So I need pixels. My 12MP Fuji is OK, and I can get away with shooting at 6.4MP RAW most of the time. But I need the facility to go up to the full 12MP some of the time.

Bigger problem is that the D2X doesn't support Firewire! That means no control from the laptop for studio shots and (more important) no fast data transfer to an external drive when I'm in the field shooting 26Mb RAW images...

Geezer

With respect, I think you're describing effects about which people worried before cameras like the EOS 1DS came out. The 1DS takes great pictures and the edges really don't seem to suffer. Users don't complain about it.

Of course, lenses tend to produce images that are sharper in the centre, and what this is doing is helping to negate the inherent disadvantage of APS-sized sensors when it comes to enlargement. You start with the sharpest part of the image, so it doesn't matter that it has to be enlarged, say, 1.6x more in each axis than film for a given print size.

I agree that we're in a transitional period right now, but I wouldn't like to put any money on which way it'll go. Large sensors work well with the current (huge!) range of 35mm lenses out there and provide the best s/n ratio. Smaller ones are - and always will be - much cheaper to produce and offer remarkably close image quality, especially when used with effectively oversized 35mm lenses. The small sensor/small lens system proposed by Olympus is, however, doomed to fail IMHO. Their products aren't that much smaller or lighter than 35mm-based systems, they're no cheaper, and so despite the fact that they're a nice idea in theory, they'll never achieve critical mass in the market.

Special small format '35mm' lenses like the Canon EF-S range look like a much better idea to me and will become popular. They offer wide angles, low cost and small size/weight, even if they're not suitable for professional use. Maybe we'll see small sensor/EF-S cameras being the consumer standard and large sensor/EF mount cameras being used professionally.

Either way, it's a great time to be a photographer

But it supports wireless 802.11g and you can control it thru Nikon Capture, so why the need for Firewire? Ok, a bit faster, but unless you are doing a lot on continuous shooting, you are unlikely to suffer lockout.

It sure is a great time to be photographer!!!!

SB,

The D2X is 12MP I believe, but as I say I have only read the specs and we don't seem to have any tests yet. If it's going to be no better than your Fuji for what you use it for then it would be silly to spend the money obviously.

I believe there is an 11g wireless unit add-on available for the Nikon D2X that allows transmission of images to a laptop etc. as well as full remote control of the camera from a laptop.

Edit: And the post above says this anyway - I need to learn to type faster

tiggers.
