Another fitness question - I need some serious advice...

Whatever you do B2Z, exercise is a plus of course in getting fit again. I think you had better not rush into heavy exercise too quickly though, you need to work up at a sensible rate because it is easy to overdo it at first and could cause problems. Extreme exercise is not good for you anyway and can cause damage over a long period of time. I know one or two long distance runners and the like who have suffered quite badly later in life.
Glad to see you have kicked the weed. I left it a bit too long before I did that and was lucky to get away with a major operation to put it right without damage.
Diet is important but I think that once you are at your preferred weight, a little of what you fancy does you no harm. Just have to work at it to control it.
Good luck anyway.

You are leaving a far bigger gap between your lunch and evening dinner so you are really hungry at night then stuffing only a few hours before going to bed.
You need to change this if you can, far better to have more healthy food for dinner then have something else perhaps fruit based at around 5pm to fill you up a bit.
Only eat lightly after 7pm, then do some exercise before going to bed.
Eating heavily at night not only increases your body fat but also increases cholestorol and also your chances of heart disease.
If you are getting chest pains you must get checked out before starting to exercise.
Start gently and work up at your own pace, it's the only way to do it.
You don't want a heart attack in your 30's like me.
Cheers

£20 - I wish - mines £51 but worth every penny. I cancelled the membership 9 months ago thinking I could excercise outdoors - but its hard to motivate yourself to run for half an hour in snow ice strong winds etc... I also found tarmac and cross country running battered my joints - sprained ligaments on a couple of occasions - should have had shares in tubigrip at one point!
Anyway back at the gym 3 times a week (David Lloyd one) and mountain biking at weekends (Delemere Forest, weather permitting - Im a wimp )
I'm 30 drink 40+ units per week, like a "social smoke" and would marry a donner kebab if she asked - 34" waist 13 stone... I feel great for the excercise and reckon a 25 min run @ 9k to start with will set you on the right path. As for cycling I reckon 8-10 mile sessions with a mix of road/track and up/down will be a decent start.
Hope the docs give you the nod to start enjoying your excercise mate - we're all different - so maybe just do what feels good for you

circa £20 is for a "barebones hardcore power rack and oly weight"-only gym

i would always advise that in general if you're doing cardio for fat loss and general conditioning, to pick the exercise that has least impact on your joints. in other words for example, pick cycling over running as it's easier on your joints.

I stick to the 2500 cals and 90g of fat thats the RDA for average male ( 5'10'' and 12 stone sounds pretty average to me!) that is printed on the side of my Cornflakes box and that seems to do me well in the Nutrition dept!
I think you can look at the whole diet thing to much and get a bit lost in all, the above intake coupled with a good hours march through the woods each day (get a cocker spaniel ) keeps me feeling fine!
Oh, and I like you I used to have the Mars Bars etc cravings and have replaced them totally with fruit - now if feeling peckish I have an Apple or Bannana instead. The other thing I found to really help me keep trim was cutting all white bread out of my diet - I really didn't appriciate how evil it is
Good luck mate,
Matt

Must agree with the Gym and exercise comments.
After my heart attack I did 12 weeks in the hospital gym and enjoyed it.
I started walking at home but as my fitness level increased I wasn't working out enough by walking.
Running was a complete waste of time, 100yds and give up was the best I could manage and then there's the wind and rain.
So I bought a £400 bike, a cycle rack and all the kit. Still couldn't get into it.
So I joined one of our local health clubs. This One
Cost is £42 a month but it's worth every penny. I still find the treadmill and cross trainer hard going but I do that and then look forward to a relax in the Sauna, Steam Room, Pool and Spa.
I would say I'm going around 15 times a month so it's less than £3 a time.
I'm fitter now than before my heart attack.
Just got to sort how the heart drugs affect my stomach.
I can't believe how different I feel on a healthy diet and exercise.
Cheers

Thanks for all the advice guys very helpful
As for the gym, yeah I looked into my local one and their cheapest membership is £37. Reason I can't pay that - new house, baby imminent and more outgoings than I can shake a stick at!
I think the skipping rope will be good for those winter nights when its too nasty to go outside. Also with baby imminent I think I will go back to doing some earlier hours at work as I will be up early in the mornings anyway so that will help with the issue of dinner time being earlier.
And yes Lee the reason I am doing this mate is fear of what may be round the corner. I really have been an idiot with my health. When smoking puff in my early to mid 20's I used to eat packs and packs of crisps and chocolate bars every night for the munchies and then go to sleep right on top of a bloated stomach - that can't be good for anyone plus the stress i've been through and lack of excercise its no surprise the drs have warned me. Stopping smoking was easy compared to the food addiction, in fact stopping smoking made the craving for bad food worse.
Like has been said, will power is the one factor that counts. Thats what I have to concentrate on. I also don't like the noticeable weight I have put on round my face in the last 6 months - but as I understand it this will probably be one of the last areas to lose it from, visible lesson/reminder for me there.

Long walks, brisk, not too fast, at night ie after 19-2000hrs.
At least 5 miles to start with, then after a couple of weeks increase to a target you find just achievable, circa 8-10 miles.
5 miles should take no more than a 50 mins.
Bin bag vests (X2), and a hoody fleece type top, joggy bottoms (X2).
Whatever the weather, every other day, no excuses.
Eat properly, at set times and never after 2000 hrs, try substituting a meal with a powdered protien drink.
When you want a sugar hit, eat grapes, green, and black, it works believe me.
Stick to this routine for at least 3 months and I guarantee, you will feel better, and you will have lost weight.........or you money back.
Talking of money, it will cost you **** all........

Cheers Yoza. 8-10 miles though?
I might alternate the every other night between brisk walking and cycling just to eliminate the boredom of walking which I detest (can't get to places quick enough hence always use the car or motorbike even just to pop up the road to the shop! )

I made the mistake getting a dog that couldnt owrk more than a mile at a time, really with I got a pointer or something to come for a run with me, would have enjoyed it much more....
I go for a 3 1/2 mile run regularry but its about the most I can do but my ankles really do hurt.... (running in a field too so its not the tarmac) really dont know how to combat this... pain if they didnt hurt Id probably manage much more distance.
as said Grapes are a supurb way of attacking the munchies and theyre healthy...
Really wanna get my house extension done but thats not gonna be for 5 years Id say, want to convert the garage into part of the house with a few nice gym machines like a treadmill... theres no way Im paying to go to a gym to get fit and if I could get the equipement in my own home then that'd be great, could work out whilst nice and warm AND watch the telly or play music

Erm well the first 2 weeks went well, cut out all biscuits, ice cream, crisps, chocolate bars. Have had a bit of a lapse in the evenings recently though, still don't eat anything bad during the day, just sandwiches, an apple and a banana but then I get comfy on the sofa in front of the telly in the evenings and have been snacking on bad things like crisps and chocolate. Not every night, but been more than I wanted which is to be T total on the sweet stuff! Been having ice cream after dinner lately as well
Stupid thing is been keeping to low fat main courses at dinner and then blow it out the window with dessert and evening munchies
Need to get one of those Hanibal Lecter masks to keep bad things away from my greedy chops!
As for excercise - nothing, was trying to get the diet sorted first so until I can get that right the excercise thing is on the back burner.
What should be your heart rate at rest for someone who is 6'3, 14-15 stone (don't actually know exactly as don't own any scales!) and early 30's? I measured mine just out of interest and it was exactly 50 beats per minute.
Whats the heart rate needed to get fat burning? 120 beats per minute? All I know is i've got to do something as chest pains have been getting worse lately (stress) and after a year of giving up i've started smoking again due to the worry of waiting for baby to be born (although do know I can stop again immediately baby is born)
Not good - need a good kick up the ar$e I know to wake me up to what I am doing to my health!

You are a lost case, all that advice, and youve done nowt, or next to nowt.
You have Zero motivation, what does it take to go out and walk/cycle around your local park, an hour out of your life, "just do it".....( Where is the Nike swoosh smilie when you need it ?)
Go on....do it now, I dare you !
So what, its dark and raining, just get your kit on, and walk fast for an hour.
{Tucks into another large slice of Vienetta}

I recently (a month ago) re-started on the health trail.. after a 10 year absence from seriou sgym training. (have done martial arts since)
I PM'd Milo and spent quite a while grilling him about my goals, and how to best acheive them...
I think a lot of progress can be made if have the willpower
Ie: when I wake up - "I CAN make it to the gym tonight" and " I WONT poison myself with processed ****e from the vending machine".....
"I WILL eat my tuna and wholegrain bread" etc...
also combined with three to four visits per week to the local old skool free weights only gym.. short sharp intense workouts using lots of 'compound' exercises- Squats, press's , dealifts and the muscles are coming along nicely
worked a treat for me.
Not lost much weight as it were ( 4-5lbs) BUT I look and feel loads better, can actually sleep at night (solid night's kip)
wife is liking the resurrected long dormant muscles too
I sit on my **** all day long for 10hrs+ in my job. you're not alone.
just remember you CAN do it mate
If you want it bad enough, and set yourself some realistic goals (weekly>monthly>annual) I WILL go to the gym three times this week> I will fit into those smart trousers by the end of the month> I want to have lost half a stone and be a 32" waist again etc..
you been to the doc yet for a checkup?

Resting heart rate is a wierd one, it doesn't really tell you much about fitness. What you really want to look at is your recovery rate (time to recover back to near your resting rate after exercise), this is what you'll really see improving as your fitness improves. Not sure how accurate this is but I was always told that you calculate your theoretical maximum heart rate as 220 - your age, so ~ 190 in your case, and you want to work at ~60-70% of your maximum to burn fat, so above 120bpm would be in your ideal range.
Good luck with the fitness regime, I've been trying to do the same myself, I put on about 2 or 3 stone in a couple of years after leaving uni and getting a job, just trying to lose it now. Currently trying to do 10km on a rowing machine every day which seems to be working nicely. J

I know its no excuse Yoza but working 6 days a week lately and just feel too knackered when I get home at 8 or later in the evenings, mentally and physically.
I know i'm being a lazy fat wank3r, I wouldn't have admitted to what little i've done if I wanted to lie about it. I just don't know how to sort it out. Very stressed out at work and home and comfort eating/smoking helps (only mentally I know cos physically its very bad). I got the mountain bike sorted, went to the end of the road and back and thought fek me thats like sitting on a razor blade (after riding a nice comfy motorbike every day) and its been back in the garage since
Embarrassed? Yes of course. Gonna sort it out? I want to but as shown, the lack of motivation is the main issue.

The heart rate required to get into 'fat-burning' mode is 60-70% of your max heart rate VERY roughly....
The trouble is, while this is an easy heart rate to maintain (if cycling, you'd be hardly out of puff), you have to exercise for 1-2 hours to really benefit at this heart rate - and NOT do it just after a meal. ie...you want your body to be drawing on fat reserves, and not the quick & easy energy just put into your stomach.
20-30 minutes at this 'fat-burning' heart rate will not get much fat burnt sadly
The key to exercise is to try and find something you enjoy. Has to be like this. Which is why cycling or walking are often the best two. You can cycle or walk to get somewhere or to see things. Cycling because it transports you over relatively long distances to see lots of different things, and walking because it gets you somewhere without being in too much of a sweaty mess once there.
ie, if your town centre is 4 miles away, walk there to buy something, and walk back. That'd be a good 2 hours of exercise at weekends - which combines exercise with a non-exercise goal (ie, buying something).
Finally, one incentive as regards the smoking. Cot-death risk is HUGELY increased if either of the parents smoke. Even if you don't smoke around the child, but in the same house.....and even if you smoke outside the house, but bring your faggy breath near the child. All proven to heighten risk.

If you hate 'traditional' exercise (gym/bike etc) why not try kick boxing or muay thai or traditional boxing?? great for fitness
worth a try?
I have done wing Chun for 5 years, but unfortunately its all based around conservation of energy so not great for fitness/weight loss
Looking forward to going back near xmas after work calms down (WC is 70 miles away) with my new found physique and fitness
bit of agression release will sort out your stress issues
worth a try?

imlach as said for the very reasons you say I will stop again after baby is born, i'm only smoking now as i'nm so worked up about waiting for baby to come along and know everything is ok. This is due to previous bad experiences and the smokes are helping me keep my head straight on that front.
Chrome tried the different fitness regime, joined a martial arts gym a few years ago. Went a couple of times to the boxing classes as I used to box at school and enjoyed it and the martial arts classes had too many people in them for my liking, and I wasn't able to keep up with their idea of warming up/working out before bag work. I was pushed so hard I went purple. Didn't think that was doing me any good so never went back So thats a no brainer plus the cost as well, no money for gyms currently. Its got to be done at home unfortunately.

Well, it seems the cheapest forms of exercise are free.
You have a bike, so that shouldn't cost you anything further.
Walking requires zero cost
Running may require a decent pair of running shoes.
Press-ups etc have their place, but require far too much motivation IMHO. Probably not your bag either.

Are rowing machines that good? I can sit on one of those and row for ages, I used to do that more than any other form of exercise when I did belong to a gym years ago. Its one form of exercise I actually enjoy but didn't think they would be much good for sorting out beer/food guts and general weight loss? Plus very expensive, but if I did have one I would definately use it. Christmas is on its way and would ask for one if there were ones that were affordable as they don't require any motivation to go out in the p!ssing of rain nine o clock at night!
