Erosion - Mountain Bikers v Hill Walkers
#35
So what we're saying is that any walker in the hills whos actually gone kitted out for the worst should be mocked beacuse they werent "hard enough" to go light.
Hmmm. And there was me thinking being prepared for the worst weather (given we cant all jog off the mountain if the **** comes down) was a good thing.

Over past West Kip, I've seen it get a bit boggy and if you are blind, deaf and have just been spun round 100 times, you may just lose your bearings but I seriously doubt it

Hope it's not walkers doing this.

Not sure if I quite agree, but MTB knee impacts can be bl@@dy painful.... Still suffering after an "off" 4 months ago...

Been a while since I've been up the Pentlands on the bike, but the Pentland Rangers (or whatever they are called now) organised a lot of work to improve paths to minimise erosion on the recognised paths up there....I guess some bikers won't be happy on the "paths" and take an offroad route from the path....
It was getting pretty torn-up in the 90's, and given walkers have been walking over it for hundreds of years with little impact, you'd have to link it to bikers in some way.....but as I said, the Pentland Rangers were working to minimise this.
In terms of sq ft area of damage, it has to be tiny. It can't really be damaging the local wildlife/ecology, as the paths can only be 0.001% of the total sq ft area of the Pentlands!!
On the other point - agressive riding. Yes, that could be improved. You see this on the Union Canal and other walkways in Edinburgh too. No excuse not to have a bell these days (99p). Oh, and a "thank-you" as they get past you if one is walking is nice.
Was in Colinton Dell today, and a silver-biker (ie, OAP!) used a huge skid (performed twice) to let me know of his prescence behind me....have to say, used to do this a long time ago before my airhorn/bell, but it's really bad karma on a quiet path. Was tempted to give him a lecture on his way past.
