"Still" good, i'd say, AP. Teams are becoming increasingly black. They're just better athletes all round. They just haven't played as much football as whites till relatively recently. Now that they are, they're excelling.

BLACK GYPSIES
During the 1920s, the entire Gypsy cold-reading patter, including the "dark spirit hovering over you" portion (the introduction to the candle scam proper), was transmitted verbatim to urban African-Americans by contact with Gypsy fortune tellers. Hoodoo workers who adopted this routine -- in those days at least -- also tended to dress themselves in some of the then-typical Gypsy garb, such as hoop earrings and head scarves. They called themselves "Black Gypsies."
Acoustic rural blues songs from the period prior to the Second World War often contain references to hoodoo that shed light on how it was practiced in earlier times. In "Black Gypsy Blues" by Walter "Furry" Lewis, recorded at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, on September 22, 1929, the singer compares his difficult but seemingly omniscient lover to a Black Gypsy reader (and also manages to include two once-popular dances -- the Eagle Rock and the Sally Long -- and a railroad line -- the New York Central -- in his grab-bag of imagery). It is interesting to note that Furry Lewis' use of the negative term "Black Gypsy" for his soon-to-be-ex-lover is almost exactly contemporaneous with Will Shade's use of the highly positive term "fortune telling woman" in The Memphis Jug Band's 1930 recording of a blues about the well-respected Spiritualist reader Aunt Caroline Dye.

Consultation on Gypsies and Travellers strategy launched
The levels of discrimination they face cut across all indices of deprivation and discrimination
The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) has launched a consultation on its strategy for Gypsies and Travellers. This sets out its work in relation to Gypsies and Travellers over the next three years.
Speaking about the launch, Trevor Phillips, CRE Chair said: "The launch of this consultation is a major step forward for the CRE in trying to find out more about and act upon the appalling levels of discrimination faced by Gypsies and Travellers. For this group, Great Britain is still like the American Deep South for black people in the 1950s.
"Extreme levels of public hostility exist in relation to Gypsies and Travellers - fuelled in part by irresponsible media reporting of the kind that would be met with outrage if it was targeted at any other ethnic group.
"We know that the levels of discrimination they face cut across all indices of deprivation and discrimination. This applies to availability and quality of accommodation, educational attainment, health status, employment profile and contact with the criminal justice system.
"The time is now right for us to push this agenda forward and we will do everything within our power to exploit opportunities to effect change. We have involved Gypsies and Travellers and support organisations at early stages in developing this draft and we are now keen to consult more widely. We don't see this as a one off exercise - if we're to make positive progress we need the ongoing involvement of Gypsies and Travellers."
Welcoming the consultation, Andrew Ryder, Policy Development Worker at the Traveller Law Reform Coalition said: "The fight for justice and equality for Travellers will be one of the toughest battles that the CRE has fought but if they continue to work with Travellers and make progress it will be a major achievement."
The consultation period runs from 27 October 2003 to 9 December 2003.
There will be a series of 5 regional and country meetings (Manchester, London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and a Legal group meeting) for individuals/organisations to respond to the draft strategy.

Good link, Jason. Interestingly, that cites facilities as the main reason for white dominance, a point discussed here a few months ago. Then i was talked into believing it was a physiological difference. Probably a combination of the two...

I totally aggree - if I went to live in India - I would visit the Taj Mahal and all other important indian historical buildings. If I was in Thailand I would visit the temples and the massage parlours - same as their own people do.
And these were all wealthy peoples that made these temples, yet it doesn't put me off.

Thing is, MOST people aren't proud of being British, if, that is, "being proud" equals "visits stately homes". As a percentage, I'd guess less 5% or fewer of the British population visit a National Trust (or equivalent) property during the course of a year. Sure, they've got 3m members, but a lot of those are non-practising, so to speak, and, like me, have life memberships which they rarely, if ever, use.
Since you've visited such places, you'll probably have observed that they're predominantly visited by:
a) Foreign tourists
b) Old people
c) Middle/upper-class people, inevitably the sort who have children called Jemima and Rupert*
In short, the poor (or any colour) don't visit. Certainly, not all black people are poor, and not all poor people are black, but the ethnic minorities are vastly over-represented in the lower economic strata in Britain. This is certainly not the only reason - another might be the fact that most stately homes are actually pretty tedious - but I'm certain it's a contributory factor.
*OK, that's not entirely true. Other names used by NT types to christen their kids include Olivia, Portia, Lucas, and Sebastian. And yes, as an NT member, my kids' names are included in the previous sentence!

If you go to the coastal towns of the Carribbean, you'll find kids swimming in the sea all day every day. Consequence of fab weather, lots of beaches and no PC nannies stopping kids having fun. As such average kids would be much stronger swimmers are they swimming more than we were riding bikes when we were 10 years old.
For the top swimmers all to be white is more likely a consequence of facilities, diet, training (and ultimately dosh). If you were to design a top swimmer, you'd need massive muscle build on the shoulders and legs - something the Afro Carribbean race has a head start on so I assume the difference is nurture not nature.
